150 years today. That’s how long we’ve been waiting. In 1876, the UK passed the Cruelty to Animals Act — the world’s first law to regulate the use of animals in scientific research. It was a landmark moment, driven by people who refused to accept animal suffering in laboratories without scrutiny or accountability. But 150 years later, animals are still being used in experiments. We cannot wait another 150 years for change. The UK now has the opportunity to accelerate its Replacing Animals in Science strategy and move towards modern, human-relevant research. 150 years is long enough. This week, stories from the UK and US have raised an uncomfortable question: why is animal suffering treated so differently depending on where it happens and who carries it out? 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞, 𝗠𝗕𝗥 𝗔𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗴𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵｡ These dogs are bred for a life in which they may be used in laboratory experiments. Campaigners are calling for an end to this trade and greater investment in human-relevant alternatives to animal testing. 𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗦. PETA reported that newborn monkeys, some just two days old, were separated from their mothers and subjected to neurological experiments at the University of Washington. The institution's primate research programme receives public funding. 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲, 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞, Bartosz Poklek was jailed for his role in an online network that commissioned and distributed videos of monkeys being tortured and killed for profit. Three stories.
