Imagine you wake up in Delft, Cape Town, this morning, and on your way to work, you saw five people being killed by machine guns. When you arrive in town, the DA tells you that you live in the best city in the country.

We humans are going to have to decide whether jobs exist simply to accomplish tasks or if employment as a social technology is worth preserving to maintain social order. Because companies are making decisions with heavy social consequences based on their own economic incentives.
Rumors that chili maker Lao Gan Ma laid off 500+ workers due to AI have gone viral in China.
Beneath Beijing’s positive messaging, many ordinary Chinese people are worried about AI and jobs.
Lao Gan Ma recently touted a new AI-powered chili inspection system that uses high-speed industrial cameras that significantly outperform manual inspection.
A stat about the company using this AI system to reduce human inspectors from 600 to 48 went viral on Chinese social media. The iconic, family-run company pushed back.
But if you look at the data, the company has reduced headcount from 2,912 to 740 in the past few years while earning record revenues.

Kathy Bates says she was sure she never thanked her mother in her Misery Oscar speech, then the interviewer showed her the tape
"She gave up her retirement because I was born so late in life to them."
"When I won the Oscar for Misery, she said, I don't know what all the excitement about, you didn't discover the cure for cancer."
"Why did I think I didn't thank her?"
"Because she should have had my life."
"I wanted her spirit to come into me and enjoy everything I was enjoying because of what she'd given up."
Her mom's whole review of the Oscar was that she didn't cure cancer, and Kathy still believed she had shorted her that night. Then she watches herself thank her mom at home, right there in the speech. Some people never stop trying to pay their parents back. You can hear it in how quiet she gets at the end.

You. 😭😭😭 the financialisation of our economy is going to come back and kick us in the ass. Seems everyone and their mother is launching a “fintech” company whose primary business model is (predatory) lending in a society that’s already heavily indebted. 💔
Former rugby player Bryan Habana says his fintech company, Paymenow, is meant to address worker issues including money running out shortly after pay day. 🎥 Boitumelo Kgobotlo

Growing up is an absurdly long series of funerals for things we weren’t ready to lose.
Wow.
No words.
My five year old daughter lost a tooth tonight and cried because she said her tooth had always been hers and now it was gone. She looked in the mirror and asked me if I could put it back. I’m constantly amazed by her beautiful soul and awareness. Five years on this earth and she already knows what it feels like to grieve something that used to be part of you. I had to hug her for a very long time. And now I’m sitting here thinking about how growing up is just an absurdly long series of tiny funerals for pieces of ourselves we weren’t ready to lose.
Ahhhh...right right right. I get it.
Well, I already knew, but I just needed to hear it from the horses mouth.
