Children who take music lessons develop a larger corpus callosum, the bridge between the two halves of the brain, and the change is permanent. A 2005 review in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences found that early music training produces structural brain changes that persist into adulthood, even if the person stops playing.
The review was led by Gottfried Schlaug at Harvard Medical School, one of the leading researchers on music and the brain. He found that children who started instrumental training before age seven had a significantly larger anterior corpus callosum than non-musicians, and the size difference was still visible in adults who had not touched an instrument in years.
The corpus callosum carries signals between the left and right hemispheres. A larger one means faster, richer communication between the two sides, and the effect shows up in tasks that have nothing to do with music: spatial reasoning, verbal memory, and the ability to process multiple streams of information at once. The music built the highway, and the brain uses it for everything.
Schlaug also found that musicians had larger cerebellums, the region involved in timing and motor coordination, and more grey matter in the areas that process sound. The brain had physically reorganised itself around the demands of the instrument, and the reorganisation was visible on a scan.
The age window matters. Children who started before seven showed the largest changes. Children who started after ten showed smaller ones. Adults who took up an instrument for the first time showed the least structural change, though they still showed some. The brain is most willing to be rebuilt by music during the years when most parents are debating whether to sign their child up for lessons. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1659ā¦

Who really owns robotic surgery data?
The platform (not the surgeon) records every move in HD + telemetry, building massive AI datasets.
Surgeons create it. Patients rarely consent to its downstream use. But the platform owns the data?

This is pretty big news from @UroOncJT and co @JUrology in press: MPS2 looks to be the first liquid biomarker offering real utility in the #activesurveillance setting for #prostatecancer. Much better NPV for upgrading than mpMRI - and less expensive! (in the US, anyway)

š§µfor the new residents and students on the meaning of 'French' and 'Gauge'.
We've covered this on here in the past, but a lot of new people are starting on surgical rotations, so let's look at them again.
As usual, we'll cover their history and what they mean.

Challenging the paradigm of āBCG-unresponsiveā Bladder Cancer: Does additional BCG have an effect?

The category āāBCG-unresponsiveāā was formulated by expert opinion and adopted by the @US_FDA to facilitate single-arm registration studies of novel agents for NMIBC
This paradigm has had tremendous success, with 3 agents approved + several ongoing single-arm registration trials #bladdercancer

Hard to view this as anything other than abuse of the law for political purposes
CNN Senior Legal Analyst Describes How The Trump Conviction Was A Political Hit Job
1. "The judge donated money... in plain violation of a rule prohibiting New York judges from making political donationsāto a pro-Biden, anti-Trump political operation."
2. Alvin Bragg boasted on the campaign trail in an overwhelmingly Democrat county, āIt is a fact that I have sued Trump over 100 times.ā
3. "Most importantly, the DAās charges against Trump push the outer boundaries of the law and due process."
4. "The charges against Trump are obscure, and nearly entirely unprecedented. In fact, no state prosecutor ā in New York, or Wyoming, or anywhere ā has ever charged federal election laws as a direct or predicate state crime, against anyone, for anything. None. Ever."
5. The DA inflated misdemeanors past the statute of limitations and "electroshocked them back to life" by alleging the falsification of business records was committed 'with intent to commit another crime.'
6. "Inexcusably, the DA refused to specify what those unlawful means actually were ā and the judge declined to force them to pony up ā until right before closing arguments. So much for the constitutional obligation to provide notice to the defendant of the accusations against him in advance of trial."
7. "In these key respects, the charges against Trump arenāt just unusual. Theyāre bespoke, seemingly crafted individually for the former president and nobody else."
8. "The Manhattan DAās employees reportedly have called this the āZombie Caseā because of various legal infirmities, including its bizarre charging mechanism. But itās better characterized as the Frankenstein Case, cobbled together with ill-fitting parts into an ugly, awkward, but more-or-less functioning contraption that just might ultimately turn on its creator."
