Gianni Infantino has created an arbitrary 53-day deadline to force through Member Association votes on contentious plans to sell FIFA stakes under a new subsidiary.
He calls this period a “democratic process”, but it’s one that is rushed and lacks transparency, and yet it has somehow still felt in the works for some time. So why are so many confederations blindsided? Clearly this soft launch, with investors in place, hasn’t happened overnight.
If there is a genuine period of consultation and debate then Infantino has to frequently face media and engage repeatedly with stakeholders and fans not just appear from his own FIFA-branded ‘Oval Office’, or only communicate/defend his position via Instagram slides.
We have a FIFA President telling everyone to “meditate, pray and watch a football game” while engaging in a pre-funded corporate coup driven by greed not a love for the game.
Infantino can argue if the vote passes that’s just democracy at play, but it’s hardly the case if those voting don’t have the full facts and are rushed into a decision skewed by a $40m funding promise.
Let’s not forget what Infantino himself said on the ill-fated European Super League: “There is a lot to throw away for maybe a short-term financial gain.”
FIFA’s new plans, also supported by Super League-backers JP Morgan, are arguably offering precisely what Infantino warned against in 2021.

More outrageous conduct from CNN.
Fake news is bad enough for the country, but pushing out a hoax headline in such a sensitive national security moment as this requires accountability.
Iran put out an official statement that simply cannot be squared with the one CNN's false headline attributes to them.
Time for change at CNN.

The IDF took what appears to be unprecedented action against the battalion involved in my team's assault & detention.
In many ways, that's due to our position as US journalists. In too many cases involving Palestinian journalists & civilians, we've seen a lack of accountability.
