Skeptical . . . Very diplomatic ✌️ This is when some people will look back at the promise to “build a wall” and think: “yep, that man sure was riiight” WASF
I'm skeptical that North American cities—the same cities that failed for decades to build enough housing for their own citizens, driving millions into poverty & homelessness—are going to undertake the massive transformations needed to welcome tens of millions of climate refugees.

The Nino index (Nino3.4) has just reached Nino-neutral, but global SST (sea surface temperature) has matched the highest level for this date, which was achieved during the last El Nino. Super warming is clear. Look for a global temperature soon of at least +1.7C, even if the "Super" El Nino turns out to be half-baked. The University of Maine Climate Change Institute has a spectacular interactive graphic that they update daily. It is a valuable research and communications tool. “Things fall apart; the maintenance schedule cannot hold.” The echo in our time from words written more than 100 yrs ago resonates . . . Indeed the worst are full of passionate intensity; our ceremony of innocence shall be drowned/overtaken by small things, as AS writes about🫤

Properly good “chat” ✌️ Covers NoAtl warming, and also Southern Ocean circulation etc. Eye opening stuff 😵‍💫 Cause of Extreme North Atlantic Warming in 2023 with Matthew England youtube.com/live/39T7bW7KA18… @danmiller999 @LeonSimons8

This is a “climate report” that should feature periodically in the (mainstream) news so that, you know, we could see that actions & policies are starting to move things in the right direction . . . ✌️

Can you color-code the decades? A. I’m curious 😬 B. If it’s as we suspect, a good visual of the changes being wrought goes a long way towards bringing others along! ✌️
Will a new record be set this year for total number of days for the global mean surface temperature to be at or above 15.50°C. F&%kery ahead! Stay tuned!

The upshot of Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI) in a nutshell 🫠 Thx for the decadal plot — illustrates the point well✌️ Vast majority (>90%) of excess energy retained by Earth system is in the oceans . . . Even if the seas can still act as a heat sink other effects are a problem😵‍💫
To see evidence for the acceleration of global sea surface temperatures, notice that the jump in average temperature between decades gets larger as the decades pass. The gap increases over time. This has been your f&%kery 101 lesson for today.

Day 9 - William E. Rees: The Enigma of Climate Inaction – On the Human N... youtu.be/WDWhjSUu8UY?si=nhq5… Highly recommend this from Prof. Rees. You owe it to yourself to at least be aware of the world we’ve created. Climate change is just a symptom of ecological overshoot . . . 🫤

If you have not yet heard (Prof.) William Rees discussing ecological overshoot and the predicament we have created for ourselves, this is highly recommended: Our Ecological Footprint and its Consequences youtu.be/7uWud8RZNE4?si=83J8… Even if you have—still recommended 😬 #COP28

If there is going to be some attempt to turn this around, the sooner the better. The *path* taken to a lower/no emissions world is the most important aspect of whatever level we finally reach.

Okay, so shouldn’t this be motivating action to (at least) begin reducing emissions? Ironic, tho, that it’ll be the “fleeting impacts” that stir the public to get serious about emissions—that have already created a lumbering giant of ocean heat content driving climate change 🖖🏼
Let's not get too distracted by the fleeting impacts of El Nino and La Nina on surface temperature. It's the steady overall ocean heating we should be most concerned about. It will continue until carbon emissions reach zero.

Why…Approve the Willow Project? | The New Yorker “the Willow project will be vulnerable to climate change. To deal with the problem ConocoPhillips has plans to install chillers to keep the permafrost frozen under its heavy equipment.” Isn’t it ironic 🫠 newyorker.com/news/daily-com…

“The tempo of change keeps galloping forward even as nothing seems to change. Everything looks much like it did; everything is different than it was.” As usual, a useful read to steady and steel oneself

Some say in fire, while some say in ice Little did we think the two would conspire to bring us to the brink 🫤 – at Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo
Replying to @AlexSteffen
An excellent piece on the same topics, by @jeffgoodell “We are dealing with an event that no human has ever witnessed," says one scientist. "We have no analog for this.” rollingstone.com/politics/po…
Strongly recommend listening to this report by Prof. Box — based on years of research — about the amount of the ice sheet that *is already committed to melt* 🫠 (The paper’s worth a read too) #ClimateEmergency – at Minato-ku, Tokyo

A big thank you to @SimonMichaux for this reality check on amount of mineral resources needed to abandon fossil fuels Highly recommend this presentation . . . A wake-up call to reconsider future energy systems and amounts of energy used before wasting ⏳💶💎 #ClimateEmergency
If you eat regularly the following should be of interest (i.e., concern): “Shoppers face smaller and worse quality onions and carrots in supermarkets after the record-breaking heatwave and drought conditions ravaged the growing of Britain’s *staple* vegetables . . . “ cc:#COP27
