Imagine if politicians were completely honest standing before voters and saying:
“We intend to bring millions of people from the developing world into your country. And here is what we expect that to mean for you.
Some of your women will be raped. Some of your fellow citizens will be murdered. Some will be robbed. Some will watch their neighbourhoods change beyond recognition, while others will be priced out of the suburbs they spent a lifetime working to afford.
Oh, and quite a few churches will be burned. And all of that is before the riots. Some shops will be smashed during the ensuing riots. Some statues will be toppled by people who apparently came here to escape backward societies but have brought a few of their less attractive habits with them.
Your taxes will rise to pay for additional housing, schools, hospitals, policing and welfare. Housing will become scarcer and infrastructure will struggle to keep pace. Jews will be targeted. And social cohesion generally will be tested like never before.
And when you complain about any of this, we will explain that your concerns are xenophobic, your expectations unreasonable and your nostalgia for a recognisable country vaguely fascist.”
