Many people pass along the erroneous idea that 危机 implies there is opportunity during a crisis.
This explanation makes much more sense.
In this word, 机 and 会 are synonyms; both translate to "opportunities". 机 is more commonly used as "opportunity; occasion" in other words. For example, 危机 wēijĪ "crisis, dangerous occasion", and 时机 shíjī "moment of opportunity".
