People use "occupation" and "apartheid" kind of together but in a sense they're incompatible because "apartheid" presumes the proper remedy is equal rights rather than ending some occupation. If the US were to occupy Mexico it would be weird to complain about apartheid. Lke hurry up and give Mexicans the vote. That would just be formalizing territorial conquest.

This is a great lesson to all the normies that you do not store important things in environment variables even though you were taught to. You can store maybe feature flags, staging or enviornment domains But not important things, there is a reason why Hashicorp Vault is as big as it is

My calendar is increasingly clogged up by these spam "meetings" like these. Assholes like @RateMonsters seem determined to kill off what little remains of the open internet. How much of a disgusting bottomfeeder do you have to be to wake up every morning and go "ooh, what if I make millions of people's days a little bit worse today?" Just one more piece of trash on the floating garbage island fighting for attention, but it's an especially despicable one. I can't turn off calendar invites, and you know damn well I don't want this. Rot in hell, all of you.

Fun fact: If I’m not mistaken California is constitutionally forbidden from raising taxes on the one thing that cannot leave
Replying to @gabriel_zucman
Hence their result: Because billionaires leave forever, the state of California loses an infinite stream of income tax revenue. But because the dreaded annual wealth tax never materializes, the state gains nothing in revenue (beyond the one-time tax). This is what delivers their net loss of nearly $40 billion.

Being a transit advocate in America is hard because this is genuinely good news, but it costs $600 million a mile for a train that runs on the street. France is building fully automated, grade-separated metro for half that.
The capital of American car culture is now building more transit than any other city in America. Los Angeles just broke ground on a nearly $4 BILLION light-rail line through the San Fernando Valley: • 6.7 miles • 11 new stations • Connections to Amtrak, Metrolink and the G Line • Access to roughly 150,000 jobs across the region Rail service is returning to Van Nuys Boulevard for the first time in more than 70 years. Los Angeles isn’t abandoning the car overnight but it is building a future where driving is no longer the only option.

Something that gets lost in all these conversations is that there were years when a major 0day would drop and technical details were almost impossible to come by. Multiple people here would stay up for days reverse engineering the issue and stitching together a working PoC, not just to prove exploitation was possible, but to help defenders understand the actual risk, develop IoCs, build detections, and clean up compromised environments.

banks eat the % of fraud happening, and every egregious fraud happening will be chased down this has protected both consumers and made cyber more efficient, because bigger companies are pooling money into this issue when fraud wasn't legally the company's problem (aka crypto), fraud was massive, cyber protections low (no efficient use of resources), and consumers were left holding the bag why would we make it the individuals' fault when there are coordinated massive entities that can solve this?

Durbin once said at the floor of the senate that US use of torture was comparable to what you found in Mao’s China and Stalin’s USSR. He immediately backed down & apologized, only for it to later come out that W admin was literally using Soviet torture manuals. He’s a coward
Read @pkcapitol on Durbin, the longest serving party whip in Senate history, who wanted to end his career walking out the front door "rather than be carried out the back.” On Harry Reid going nuclear: “He was warned ahead of time there would be retribution. It all occurred and we’re still suffering from that." And on why Dems shouldn't follow McConnell rule on SCOTUS: washingtonsun.com/congress/d…

I'm sure I can fit a php shell write into the payload, so the response is useless. Or strike with multiple different writes to accomplish it.
The new capability that we built to help defend php2shell is live. The @Cloudflare WAF now has full transaction detection that evaluates the request and the origin response together, and response rules block a match before it reaches the requester. Example from the post: unauthenticated hit on /admin that comes back 200 text/html. Block it. Auth failures and redirects can then pass through untouched. blog.cloudflare.com/full-tra…

Theoretically, stuff like this is *such* an easy fix in the UK. The Labour Party holds >400 seats in the Commons. They could pass it virtually without effort. But there's just no interest in a serious, pragmatic rewrite of the tax code.
Marginal tax rate of 2,000% 🤯

The 21st century fertility decline is driven by falling 1st (and to some extent 2nd) births. Declining marriage is one cause. But @PeterRFB @DrJasonCarroll and I show that unsupportive friends may uniquely shape 1st/2nd birth decisions too! cc @FamStudies

It's kinda crazy that I have a certificate for hosts I do not control, that actually works for so much software out there still. First time in my life :) Any other root CA incident I remember did not result in me actually being able to sign something.

Ok, Berkeley Bowl is great. Also, over the course of a week, 3 people I know independently compared visiting Berkeley Bowl to Russians crossing the iron curtain and discovering the abundance of Western supermarkets. 2 of them mentioned this photo of Yeltsin:
i've lived in berkeley 5.5y, i think i've never been to berkeley bowl

I'm listening to the Sold a Story podcast season two, which is on math education in the US, and it is enough to give me an aneurysm, seriously. The season opens with a bunch of little kids' voices doing very basic algebra, and you learn later that these are poor Black four-year-olds, and all of them are getting the problems correct. Oh, and they're super engaged. Apparently, there was a group that figured out you can have kids go very fast in math if you just did direct instruction. But somehow, culturally, this was deemed "too hard" and too much of a "pressure cooker" for little kids. It's pretty funny because it's not like there was any high-stakes testing or anything. It literally was just teaching the kids instead of "letting them discover it themselves." I did a master's in education, and there was a lot of content in the program about equity, and how socioeconomic class, parental habits and attitudes, and level of education really shape a kid's academic achievement. It's just infuriating to hear that when they discovered a teaching method that works in spite of these disadvantages, it was thrown out as being, I guess, somehow not "fun" enough. It's difficult to believe that they didn't actually have ulterior motives.

The peak time to work abroad was the 80s-00s when salaries were somewhat comparable and Hong Kong still was worth working in. The post-2008 economic divergence between the US & Europe is too severe & America’s banking/housing convenience has become too obvious compared to Europe
