A personal “post” from me:
As I shared in more detail in my final newsletter, my work as a journalist is making way for the next chapter of my career. Earlier this week, I stepped away from my role as a reporter at The Texan to focus on my summer legal internship. It's been years in the making, but the moment seems to have arrived far sooner than expected.
While I am not entirely certain I will never pick up a reporter's pen again, the current plan is to focus on finishing up my degree and beginning a new profession.
I am incredibly grateful to the Burtons for giving me the opportunity to join The Texan more than four years ago. I'm also thankful to our readers, whose support made this work possible. It has been a privilege to serve you and to tell the stories that matter to Texas. It has been one of the great privileges of my life.
Texas is fortunate to have many talented reporters committed to informing the public. If I can ever be of help, don't hesitate to reach out and don’t be a stranger.
As for what's next, my focus now turns toward finishing up the last bits of my degree and prepping for a new career. I'm excited for the opportunities ahead and eager to see where this new path leads.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey.

Unsurprisingly, the godfather of legal typography—@mbutterick—has a thoughtful and helpful entry explaining the utility and derivation of en & em dashes: – at San Antonio, TX
Replying to @yunta_tsai
(The rules of English need to change to put spaces between the em dashes, as they presently too much resemble a hyphenated word, rather than a parenthetical phrase. Also, “—“ is an unpleasantly long a line. The en dash, “–“, is a better length.)
Agree on the space formatting part. Disagree on the em dash being too long.
Wherein @elonmusk stumbles into an appellate lawyer topic. 🤣
I didn’t learn to use em dashes until law school. I’m used to doing it without spaces now, but I don’t think Elon’s suggestion is wrong. Some people do it with spaces too.

After a meaningful and substantial conversation with Dean Thompson and her team, I have full confidence that the needs of our rural and border communities will be met under her speakership.

Interesting threads here
The political “influencer” industry has gotten out of hand. Special interest money has flooded the online ecosystem.
It’s why I’ve been working with lawmakers to change disclosure laws and I have also had conversations with folks at the FTC.
If you get paid to promote a protein bar you need to say “paid partnership,” if you get paid to attack someone who works for the Trump admin or trash a piece of legislation, no disclosure is needed. Time for that to change!

Amen to that. Hamilton made some really good points about why the potus needs sole pardon decision making authority, which I think needs to be kept in some circumstances. But it needs reform to prevent its use in conflicts of interest, limiting mass pardons, and keep it from short circuiting corruption cases.

Holds the phones.
Texas Republicans may win a statewide race yet.
On the Court of Criminal Appeals, John Messinger (R) leads Holly Taylor (D) by about 47,000 votes, per Secretary of State.
Republicans still searching for a win in a statewide race.

It’s early, but @NathanForTexas called a Blexas wave back in June
He’s now the odds on favorite to be the next Attorney General
In my year-plus covering the 2026 Texas elections, I’ve constantly started questions to Democrats with “you know it’s an uphill battle…”
@NathanForTexas is the first one to push back.
