Another sleepless, terrifying night and morning.😟 Non-stop drones and missiles overhead. No electricity at all right now, with emergency blackouts triggered by deliberate attacks on power plants. The danger hasn't passed - drone threat alert is still active. I am completely mentally and physically exhausted. But we keep holding on. 🫂🇺🇦

In response to @johnredwood, Labour’s Business Minister refused to rule out NATIONALISING Poundland!
Insane.
The hard truth is that in a dynamic economy, businesses are created, whilst others sadly fail.
We cannot expect taxpayers to step in and solve all of life's problems.
The hard truth is that government must do fewer things, and do them better. It is not there to solve all of life's problems.
Labour and Reform are squabbling over who can be the most interventionist in the Poundland dispute.
Getting involved in Poundland is the opposite of doing fewer things better. In a dynamic economy, thousands of businesses will be created every year, whilst others sadly fail.
Although not a frequent shopper, I’ve always been a fan of Poundland. Mrs Griffith has been known to have to fish me out from wandering the aisles, marvelling at how some of the products are so much cheaper than elsewhere.
Brands of my youth such as Our Price records, Woolworths and Oddbins are no more. Consumption patterns change, new technologies emerge but so long as there are entrepreneurs willing to take and back risks, new growth fills the places vacated by others.
Poundland was founded in the 1990s. It will have taken a place left by other businesses, had that not been allowed it would never have existed in the first place.
The government has a huge role to play in sustaining profitable businesses in the UK, but the bar should be set very high on piling into disputes once a business is already in trouble.
Instead, the government should make it less expensive and risky to employ staff, lower business rates, tackle planning red tape, deliver cheaper energy and lock up prolific shop lifters. All of these would help our retailers.
If there is ever a Poundland ‘post-mortem’, just like the rest of the High Street, I am sure these factors will feature prominently. If I were Chancellor, reducing those burdens, rather than grandstanding on social media, would be my focus.
In this case, some are asking that the government ‘step in’. In reality, that means government deciding what rules apply to whom and telling businesses that politicians know better than them. This never goes well and that judgement is often clouded by political factors.
If we enter a world in which politicians decide the future of businesses, we will find that businesses must put a ‘price’ on the risk of government sticking their fingers in everywhere. The cost of doing business goes up, and fewer people bother at all. We end up in a world where it’s who you know that matters, not what you know.
Investors, who have a choice where to take their money, will demand a higher price to do business here - or stay away entirely. Every well-intentioned regulation or intervention has its unintended consequence.
It sounds harsh, but not every problem has a government-shaped solution. And sometimes the most mature and courageous political position is to stick to those things which government can do to make. That decision won’t always be popular, but it will be based on the truth.

Former PM of Finland:
"The only way we can avoid decades of war is to make sure that Ukraine pushes Russia completely out of Ukrainian territory.
Ukraine must win and regain its territories. I don’t think Putin should get another chance to save face when the war is over.”

Thank you, Britain! ❤️🇬🇧 The UK is launching a Ukrainian GCSE, so Ukrainian children who fled the war can now take their own language as a school exam.
The schools minister even apologised to the kids who were once told to study Russian. That means a lot.
More than 30,000 Ukrainian children have found a home in the UK, and this is exactly what friends do. Thank you.

Jews maintained a continuous documented presence in the Land of Israel for over 3,000 years, through Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Crusader and Ottoman rule. Modern Zionism relied on legal land purchases from Ottoman owners and immigration under the League of Nations Mandate. The 1947 UN partition created Jewish and Arab states; Jews accepted it, Arab states rejected it and invaded. The connection is historical and archaeological, not solely a religious claim.

Following Sir Winston Churchill’s death, his widow Clementine received many letters.
One particularly poignant,
“That he died is unimportant, for we must all pass away. That he lived is momentous to the destiny of all. He is not gone. He lives wherever men are free.”

No, it's Birmingham.

Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face.
These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots. They came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first.
We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election and carried out one of the most essential functions of our democracy.
While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future.

In case you're unfamiliar with George Madgwick, he was outed in the ITV documentary recently as the neo-Nazi Reform councillor in Portsmouth.
He's been a cosy contributor to many media shows, not least @ShelaghFogarty on @LBC who has had many laughs with him on air.
Reform UK once again will claim that it's 'one bad apple' but it is obvious to all now that they do not vet candidates.
This is a truly horrific set of charges and should, in normal times, trigger a nationwide investigation into the party.
But will it?
No, we know it won't at all. Farage will brush it off as he always does.
We should not let them skirt this latest disgusting breach of trust.

Shabana has made a serious mistake surrendering to Labour MPs. So I’m putting people on notice - when we get into government we will scrap this weak policy.
Immigration is too high. Labour are making a bad situation much, much worse.
The Conservative Party is under new management. I accept this problem started under a previous Conservative govt. Many of those in that Cabinet have gone to Reform where they belong.
And I’ve got a proper plan to fix it👇
Two years ago @KemiBadenoch won over 50% of the membership vote to become leader of @Conservatives
In that time she has renewed our party, energised the membership and got us winning again.

A lot of us were very willing to have a debate without heat, @stonewalluk, and the reason that never happened wasn't because gender critical feminists didn't want one.
While we were trying to get you to listen to our concerns, your former CEO was telling a BBC boss that gay people not wanting to include the opposite sex in their dating pool was 'sexual racism'. While we were pointing out the homophobia inherent in gender ideology, Stonewall ambassador Alex Drummond (a bearded, heterosexual man who'd had no surgery and taken no cross-sex hormones but liked wearing skirts), was going into schools to talk to students about his 'lesbian' identity. @BluskyeAllison, who actually is a lesbian, was subject to unlawful discrimination at her place of work for tweeting: ‘Stonewall recently hired Morgan Page, a male bodied person who ran workshops with the sole aim of coaching heterosexual men who identify as lesbians on how they can coerce young lesbians into having sex with them. Page called [it] “overcoming the cotton ceiling”.’
When the UK Supreme Court upheld women's right to single sex spaces, you issued a statement expressing your unhappiness about the ruling. In her report on your unhappy influence at the University of Essex, you were found by barrister @akuareindorf to have misrepresented the law as it related to women's rights: '[Stonewall have] stated the law as Stonewall would prefer it to be, rather than the law as it is’.
In 2018, you publicly advised schools to shred a research pack saying there were risks to puberty blockers, in spite of the fact that you aren't a medical charity and that there was already credible evidence that puberty blockers are neither irreversible nor harm-free. Meanwhile you produced your own educational packs, recommending a children's book, for ages 5-9, in which the parent 'is neither a man, nor a woman – they’re non-binary.' In July 2022, Stonewall sent out a tweet that read ‘Research suggests that children as young as two recognise their trans identity'.
@thetimes has reported how you've sought to control the language used by NHS trusts and government on their social-media accounts. Organisations would get points from you for replacing commonly understood words with ideologically approved terms, eg, 'birthing parent' instead of 'mother'. thetimes.com/uk/society/arti…
In short, you took a maximalist position on gender identity ideology, which you attempted to enforce by diktat. You refused to acknowledge that you'd hitched your wagon to a cause that, unlike civil rights, gay rights or women's rights, sought to strip rights from others. You sought to curtail everyone's right to freedom of speech and belief by controlling what it was permissible to think and say, through the management and political class. You have argued against women's and girl's rights to their own spaces, their sports and to assemble without men. Your former CEO tried to shame gay women/men into dating the opposite sex if the latter claimed to be female/male.
Your mantra was 'no debate' because, like all totalitarians, you preferred slogans, bullying and infiltration of powerful institutions to talking to opponents. You appear to have had no concern for the lowly people your ideology was harming: gender confused kids, female rape victims, female prisoners, regular people hounded and investigated at their places of work for refusing to accept the new mandates on sex and gender issued from on high.
Your 'activism' has been a disaster for those trans-identified people who really do just want to get on with their lives in peace. You have besmirched the name of an organisation many of us were once proud to donate to, the charity that was partly responsible for securing the legal right of gay people to marry, which a lot of us thought would never happen in our lifetimes. The milquetoast words quoted below do not erase a decade of gender activism that has been disastrous not only for individuals but for society as a whole.
There was once a debate to be had, but until you acknowledge the direct harm you've caused, it is no more possible to debate you than to persuade a person in the throes of a drug-induced psychosis that they are not, in fact, the reincarnated Christ.
