"Violence solves nothing", says a government that twice ignored a *quarter of the population* marching peacefully, and was twice pressured into concessions by more confrontational tactics

Our country has a “justice” system that criminalizes poverty + disproportionately targets race, yet routinely pardons large-scale crimes of wealth and privilege. Moments like these tell us it’s less a justice system, and more a class enforcement system. ⬇️
As NBC News reported last week, federal prosecutors have agreed to a guideline sentence range of 4-10 months in jail for Felicity Huffman, but they say they will make a recommendation for the lower end of that range and will allow Huffman to argue for a 0-6 month range.

It’s easy to forget that we don’t always have to identify with our thoughts. Some thoughts demand we feel fear or cry out for rebuttal, but we can also notice what’s happening, say “oh, that’s interesting”, and move on.
Recent learning: if there's a task I'm having difficulty starting, removing uncertainty often helps. This can take the form of breaking it down into its first few concrete steps, figuring out some information, or making a choice I need to get started.

Because these things are quick, I now try to do them when I'm *planning* the task to obviate future aversiveness. I've also found that actually writing down whatever I come up with is an important part of the process (vs keeping it in my head).

So. Hi new people! Apparently, we're gonna talk about sex. Like physical sex! Because... there's some confusion. First, sex defined: We're talking physical sex here, not gender. Body parts, hormones, and genetics (and more). BLUF: BIOLOGICAL sex is a spectrum 1/

A useful skill I've acquired recently: noticing what I intend to do vs what I don't. E.g. I noticed I did not intend to exercise tonight, in spite of telling myself I would.

After that, I started recognizing the presence or absence of the same feeling in my day to day life. It's been helpful.

I suspect other people could learn this in a similar way. If this sounds interesting, try playing around with intention for a few minutes and see what you notice!

In February, I called Google out for selling bump stocks (against their own policy) and they made a big fuss, briefly blocking all gun keywords. Six months later, @colinmjensen has found that Google Shopping is selling bump stocks again. xitter.cf/colinmjensen/status/10…
Replying to @Pinboard
Searching for “bump gun” in google shopping gives a bump stock as the 4th result. Google sucks at policing itself

I always found the charge of virtue signaling to be a curious one. On the list of transgressions worth caring about, doing good deeds but not truly meaning it ranks infinitely higher than doing shitty things as an authentic asshole. xitter.cf/razenha/status/1018249…

I am, sadly, going to retweet an earlier thread. Media: please don’t put the killer’s face on loop, on front pages, on your app notifications. Don’t sensationally publicize manifestos. Focus on victims and structural causes. Don’t help inspire the next killer. xitter.cf/zeynep/status/96390058…
Time for that sad reminder. After Robin Williams' suicide, sensational media coverage that violated the CDC guidelines resulted in a 10 PERCENT increase in suicides. Same effect applies to mass shootings. Newsrooms, please be considerate in your coverage. nytimes.com/2015/08/27/opini…
