Pune was never comparable to Coimbatore, even 30 years ago. In the 1991 census, Pune was Indiaโs 8th largest city. Coimbatore ranked 18th.
By then, Pune already had a substantial industrial base. Hindustan Antibiotics was established in Pimpri in 1954, followed by Bharat Forge in 1961, Cummins India in 1962 and Thermax in 1966. Tata Motors built its Pimpri plant in the mid-1960s, and Bajaj Autoโs Akurdi plant produced the Chetak scooter in the 1970s.
Infosys was incorporated in Pune in 1981. In 1990, Pune became one of the first three Software Technology Parks in India, alongside Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar. Work on the Hinjawadi IT hub began in 1998. Pune was ranked 2nd in IT exports in 2000s/2010s. Pune actually lost it to Hyderabad.
The comparison with Coimbatore arises because it is Tamil Naduโs second-largest city, just as Pune is Maharashtraโs but both are very different in scale and size of development.
Really hope Coimbatore rises faster. Need more and more cities!
