Brand’s faith seemed genuine to me at the time when I was a guest at his private baptism. I have attended a few now. Even visiting in prisons with people who have committed terrible crimes. It's part of our calling as men and women of faith, to love and serve anyone. It is the sick that need healing. Judgement is for the courts and God… I wouldn’t want to ever discourage someone’s coming to faith. It is right that justice has now been served. I can’t imagine how hard this time has been for the victims, the heroes of the day.

These welcome words from the King of Jordan, Abdullah II after the terrorist massacre at a Greek Orth church in Karak yesterday:
The terrorist attack against Karak will be met with the harshest retaliation. Those who delude themselves into thinking that they can divide Jordanians with their bullets have no chance in the face of our unity. All Jordanians, from north to south, are partners in land and fate, and nothing stands between them. Our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured. Every Jordanian life is precious, and we will strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten our nation

This is such devastating news – not just for those present but for all Christians in Jordan, which has long been seen as a safe haven for the whole region.

At least six people were slaughtered and 28 others wounded as the terrorists ambushed the gathering 110 miles south of Amman. Writer: Bri

The Catholic Church teaches that the death penalty is "inadmissible," primarily because every human being has God-given dignity, even a murderer, even a mass murderer. The televising of an execution is barbarism of the worst kind, offering up death as entertainment. Some Catholics still reject Pope Francis's magisterial pronouncement on the death penalty, which is now included in the Catechism. But opposition to the death penalty, grounded in the respect for all human life, is not a brand new doctrine. Rather, it is one that took time to develop, as the church came to understand more deeply the innate dignity of every human life. "The new evangelization calls for followers of Christ who are unconditionally pro-life: who will proclaim, celebrate and serve the Gospel of life in every situation. A sign of hope is the increasing recognition that the dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone who has done great evil. . . . I renew the appeal I made . . . for a consensus to end the death penalty, which is both cruel and unnecessary." —St. John Paul II, St. Louis, Missouri, January 27, 1999

Labour, Tories, Lib Dems and Greens: I demand you stand down in Clacton. I will be a unity candidate and pledge to build at least one affordable house. Nigel Farage says he wants The People versus the Establishment. So be it. Leave him to me.

There's been a shift in thinking about how or where people might encounter God. Forget the quiet armchair-based retreat. Bring on the active retreat, which sees the body as an instrument of worship and thanksgiving. My piece in the @ChurchTimes churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2…

Tomorrow marks 135 years since Pope Leo XIII brought out his landmark encyclical on workers' rights, amid rapid social change that threatened to overlook those rights. Will tomorrow be the day Pope Leo XIV issues his encyclical on an ethical approach to AI?

About two months after Robert Francis Prevost became Pope Leo XIV, he put in a call to his bank back home, a close friend, the Rev. Tom McCarthy, told a gathering of Catholics last week. The new pope identified himself as Robert Prevost, saying that he wished to change the phone number and address that the bank had on file. The pope answered the security questions correctly. Then, the woman on the line for the bank told him that it wasn’t enough — he would have to come to the branch in person. “He said, ‘Well, I’m not going to be able to do that,’” Father McCarthy said in a video clip shared on social media. The pope tried a different tack. “Would it matter to you if I told you I’m Pope Leo?” he asked, according to Father McCarthy. She hung up.

Popes are successors of Peter, part of a continuity. But it’s amazing the difference nationality makes. As an American with English as his mother tongue, Leo's comments about Trump are not delivered thru an interpreter or in hesitant translation. Result? Extra directness + impact

In the Kingdom of God, ‘there is no sword, no drone, no vengeance, no trivialisation of evil, no unjust profit, but only dignity, understanding and forgiveness’, Pope Leo said in an appeal to ‘the leaders of nations’ at a prayer vigil for peace in St Peter’s on Saturday.
