#Egypt: In an outrageous decision, a court has just ordered the closure of the independent news site @MadaMasr, the confiscation of its assets and imposed the maximum fine, which is over 50,000 USD. Editor-in-chief @Linaattalah, unjustly accused of operating the site without a license, is currently in custody, according to our information. Mada Masr has been seeking a license since 2018 but has received no response from the authorities. This shameful ruling must be overturned immediately, and Lina Atallah released at once!

CPJ condemns the referral of @MadaMasr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah to trial for operating a website without a license that Egyptian authorities have themselves refused to grant for years. Egypt is weaponizing its media law to punish independent journalism and intensify one of its worst crackdowns on the press in years, which began with the arrest of six Matsdaash journalists. It is long past time for Egypt to end this campaign and allow independent media to report freely.
