Last week, white nationalists and India's elite both attacked Americans celebrating Diwali. This week, India's right decided the Hindu diaspora defending American pluralism is deracinated and westernized. If India's elite, and the racists, are ignorant and out of touch, so are many of the commentators on the Indian right expressing doomerism and contempt for the diaspora. My article provides important historical and cultural context for why the religious dynamics in India DO NOT translate to the American context.
