🇸🇦🇾🇪 Saudi Arabia is the world’s top buyer of U.S. weapons, and Houthi missiles are still getting through.
It just paid $9 billion for 730 Patriot missiles, yet Houthi strikes have hit its airports and killed at least 14 people.
So how? It comes down to 4 things.
First, size. Saudi Arabia is about 3 times as big as Texas, with oil sites, airports and bases spread out across all of it.
Second, experience. The Houthis learned how to flood radars with drones while firing at Israel, and some of their missiles can change direction mid-flight.
Third, numbers. They’ve grown from about 30,000 fighters in 2015 to as many as 350,000 by 2024, while Saudi Arabia is reportedly running low on interceptors.
And fourth, a bad guess. A former U.S. ambassador to Riyadh says the Saudis assumed the Houthis would never hit civilian targets like airports.
They were wrong, and now they’re paying for it.

The Saudi-led coalition warned civilians to evacuate Yemen’s main oil company station, Al-Sabaha, in Sanaa, signaling an imminent strike.
It looks like a major economic target, but it isn’t. Still, it will affect logistics in the region and possibly the military’s as well.
There are no relevant targets in Yemen today, and that is a problem for the Saudis.
Until 2014, oil and gas were central to Yemen’s economy, about 20-30% of GDP and 70-80% of government revenues, with a large share exported. Production peaked at 400-450 thousand barrels per day and today barely exceeds 20 thousand.
In response, Yemen’s Houthis renewed their warning to all workers at Saudi oil facilities and airports to evacuate, signaling more strikes ahead.
What tends to happen? More Saudi attacks and more Yemeni responses.
And no, this is not an ordinary war. It is a war against the heart of the petrodollars, and Trump will be forced to do something different from what he has been doing, whether through concessions to Iran or a resumption of the war.
