In early December, I along with my colleague @Anuj__Behal visited Uttar Pradeshs Tunisia village to report on India’s AI data-centre boom. This story looks at how 200+ data centres are reshaping water stress and groundwater access in host communities. @NikkeiAsia asia.nikkei.com/business/tec…

Sharjeel Imam questioned foundational ideas behind India’s democracy, secularism and constitution in an interview with The Quint. I explore the debate it triggered among India's Muslims. @AJEnglish aljazeera.com/news/2026/11/5…

In many parts of the world, governments build roads around old trees to preserve them, or find other routes. In Kashmir though, the govt, displaying cavalier disregard for environmental preservation, has decided to fell old chinars in Ganderbal. Heritage doesn't grow in a day.

Perhaps the uncomfortable possibility is that Sharjeel is not asking questions that belong to the past. Perhaps he is asking questions that the present has still failed to answer. Syed Hammaad Mehraj writes maktoobmedia.com/share/11676…

I’ve long wondered about this practice: how is it ok, in today’s age, to have a ‘pseudonym’ columnist? I’d understand for whistleblower; personal story of risk. But for a regular “analysis”column that can fire away anything on India’s most divisive issue without accountability?
1/5 Sharjeel Imam has given an interview detailing his Islamist manifesto. Surprisingly, no storm has been kicked up over pronouncements that are so unapologetically anti-liberal, anti-secular, anti-democracy, anti-Constitution—in a word, anti-national. 2/5 He openly calls the Constitution fascist, labels secularism a trap, and denounces democracy as a contrivance to deny Muslims their political rights. 3/5 The piece is a litany of indictments against the liberal class. Imam rejects any difference between liberals and Hindutvadis. In his essentialist worldview, all Hindus are the same, unanimous in denying Muslims political power they claim as a divine right. 4/5 Inadvertently, Sharjeel has recognised something that liberals have been fighting shy of acknowledging: that Hindutva’s idea of India is anchored in the same “overarching nationalist framework”— that Muslims are Indians above all else. 5/5 For more, read this Opinion article by Ibn Khaldun Bharati, who looks at Islam from an Indian perspective: Sharjeel Imam’s Islamist manifesto will be forgotten. The silence of liberals will not theprint.in/opinion/sharjeel…

Thread 🧵 1/ NEW REPORT: Billions of advertising auctions determine in real time which ads we see on websites and in apps every day. Our latest research shows how the same data fueling this advertising ecosystem is being used to profile millions of users and silently infect targets with zero-click mercenary spyware, a novel attack technique we call "Adfection.” Read the report: citizenlab.ca/research/how-d…

Here’s what the government and Delhi police are really telling you: ‘Guys, ’twas a famous victory! We won the match hands down. We saw to it that the rival team could not show up at the ground.’ That’s assuming this was a T20 fixture and dismissing any other contests or formats in this series yet unfolding. And ignoring the fact that the rival teams humbled them repeatedly, sometimes hilariously, at multiple venues beyond Jantar Mantar. It’s also assuming that employing brute force to deny young people entry to a designated protest site in the capital of their own country, using 35,000 or more security personnel to do so, cancelling 250 trains, arresting people on board aircraft, yanking them off buses, detaining thousands across Delhi and the country at their homes or in police stations, cracking down on independent journalists, and deploying their discredited media attack hounds – was a victory. And meanwhile CJI Surya Kant who made the Cockroaches a household word has added another fascinating insect to his lexicon, advising the authorities that “one should not use a hammer to kill a fly." Cockroaches, flies, gosh! What’s next in the queue, spiders that trap themselves in their own webs? Today Delhi brought alive the old Sanskrit saying Vinash Kale Viprita Buddhi. When doom approaches, the mind losses its balance and judgement.

UPDATE: Three Newslaundry reporters detained by Delhi Police. Our reporters @AshwineSingh, @SavyasachiAstha, and @anmolpritamND have been detained while covering the October 10 protest. Delhi Police have also seized Newslaundry’s official phones, which our reporters were using to carry out their reporting duties. When the journalists identified themselves as media personnel, they were reportedly told, “Koi media nahin hai.” Around 30 people have been put into a single bus, including protesters and journalists. Our reporters have identified Inspector Dhan Singh Malik as the officer who snatched the phones. Journalists are there to report, not to protest. They were not obstructing police operations. On what grounds are they being detained and their phones seized? @DelhiPolice must explain these actions and allow journalists to do their jobs without intimidation.

My colleague, one of India's best investigative reporters, Ayush Tiwari @sighyush has been detained by Delhi Police near ITO. He was not even at Jantar Mantar. He had his press card prominently displayed. He told the police many times he was a journalist. Despite that he was bundled into a van and taken away.
