I just updated aklen.net with the full story: 25 years building every stage of the customer journey.
From early speech AI and IVR systems, to scaling global contact center operations at Siemens, founding the patented CUKKA wearable payments product, driving search and e-commerce funnels at Yandex, and leading sovereign technology & payments growth at PayPal — now back to AI-powered tools.
One self-reinforcing loop.
If you're evaluating opportunities in fintech, payments, commerce platforms, or operational scale — I’m happy to hop on a 30-min diligence call.

Haven’t figured out yet why an animal’s head is so frequently served with the rest of it here in China.

Visited Youkai today, one of the biggest laundry pod makers in China.
About a billion pods a year, 100,000+ tonnes of detergent, ¥1bn (€130m) revenue, and contract manufacturing for Unilever and hundreds of other brands.
80% of production is white label. Their own brand is growing double digits a year, but they reckon a consumer brand takes 5–10 years to build.
The unit economics: a pack sells for ¥18 and costs ¥14 to make. 22% gross margin, single-digit net.
Very representative of the Chinese market: Hypercompetitive, super tough for companies, great for consumers, and it forces everyone to get very efficient.
Most companies here want to sell abroad though, where they say they make 5–6x the profit. Youkai does roughly 35% of their production for companies abroad.
Favourite detail i saw: floor 12 (building has 16 stories in total, 16 is CEOs office) is for livestreaming. I knew livestream shopping was big in China, but I wouldn’t expect people to buy laundry pods like this.

Around 3 million Chinese private companies face a generational handover in the next 10 years, and it‘s the founders' kids who grew up in the digital age we should probably be watching.
Today, we visited a mattress factory in Foshan where the son is taking over, and he's gone all in on the brand:
> built an entire museum of sleep explaining the production process
> added AI point-cloud scans to match mattresses to body types
> or my favourite: wrote a song about the company's history and sang it himself (yes, this was pre-AI slop; last video).
Reminds me of many other new owners on TikTok rethinking online marketing.
Next to highly automated consumer lines, they sell handmade mattresses filled with white horsetail hair that go for up to ¥600,000 (~€80k, second pic).
Horsehair in mattresses is an old European high-end tradition. Tail hair is longer and thicker than mane, so it springs back better and lasts for decades. White hair is finer and rarer and so in part it’s about selling the idea of luxury that some people care about.

‘Podcast' is a portmanteau of ‘iPod’ and ‘broadcast.’
Let’s break it down.
The word ‘cast’ comes from the Old Norse word ‘kasta,’ meaning to “throw.”
When people would throw seeds over a broad area, it was called ‘broadcasting.’

This is an absolutely incredible read.
Taiwan took down a $343 million laundering network without needing evidence from Cambodia or Beijing.
Prince Group is the Cambodian conglomerate US prosecutors say ran scam compounds. It ran its money through Taiwan like a spy operation. 250+ shell companies. 453 offshore accounts. Fake invoices and fake leases. Mansions and supercars bought through shells.
Cash came out with a spy trick. A member photographed a specific banknote’s serial number in an app. A courier matched the bill in person. No names. No accounts. No wire records.
A bank insider leaked alerts so accounts could be emptied early. A lawyer held cash out of investigators’ reach.
Taiwan’s Article 20 lets prosecutors charge unexplained money without proving the crime abroad. $175 million seized. 62 defendants indicted.

Drilling in the Jackdaw gas field will make our gas cleaner, but not cheaper, says the boss of Octopus Energy.
Greg Jackson tells @AliFortescue that the biggest priority for the UK should be to reduce its dependence on gas.

Lab grown gold? Yes, actually lab transformation of Mercury into natural Gold. And not to worry to sell your gold because even in the future at its peak, fusion gold would be 2 tons per year made in lab vs. 5000 tons mined gold per year globally, so not big commercial distress for a sell off in gold markets now.
But hey, big congratulations for making it!

In 2025, we published a bold proposal to use fusion reactors for gold production.
And now we’ve done it: Mercury transmuted into stable gold, using fusion neutrons, at 10x the record set by CERN in 2025.
We’ve reduced alchemy to a series of difficult but tractable engineering problems.
