Estyn: "Overly scaffolded activities limit pupilsā independence and reduce opportunities for them to think for themselves" & "pupil leadership is too adult-directed or does not involve all groups of pupils well enough"

My biggest concern about 'oracy' is that it will become another poor proxy in the classroom.
It will become an end in itself because speaking is easy to observe - there will be plenty of unproductive, unstructured talk that will show little benefit.

Oracy floats on a sea of knowledge
The UK government wants oracy assessed āfrom primary to GCSE and beyondā. My take on why you can only speak well about what you know:

Y4 have been busy creating felt cushions, using running stitch, back stitch and whip stitch to join felt before adding appliquƩ details. Building on earlier skills, this learning develops precision and creativity, preparing pupils for more complex D&T projects in UKS2 @PKCKST

And oracy enthusiasts donāt often explain that effective spoken language, to argue or persuade, draws on the conventions of *written* language. This is language not commonly used in ordinary speech.
To learn to speak well requires learning the specialised language of writing.
As Sealy says: talking floats in a sea of āwriteā. primarytimery.com/2024/06/21ā¦

In this lesson, pupils learn that the renaissance painters wanted to make their paintings realistic, so they used linear perspective, where lines and shapes are used to show three dimensional space in a two-dimensional work of art:
Year 6 have been learning about linear perspective Art. They created their own pieces of artwork that included a vanishing point 𤩠#STPArt

@educationgovuk, @LucyMPowell - please could you update schools, teachers and educational folk when the consultation on the new curriculum update will be launched? It was due in September and it would be very helpful to know about its arrival so we may plan ahead. Many thanks

Even if subject knowledge was easily imparted across a system of teachers (itās not) there is only a tenuous connection between knowing your subject and being able to decompose, sequence, and assess it effectively. This is why the field needs to embrace well-designed materials.
