We're going to look back at how much time people spent learning to use software and wonder why we thought that was normal.

“writing is thinking” but for all the things.
The thing about a 20 slide deck previously taking hours to construct vs having AI now do it in minutes is that the hours it took to create it in the old world meant that everything was thoughtful, crafted, and scrutinized. In the hands of someone good, it made for breakthrough work.
AI is making everyone "think" they are good, but it's getting really tired really fast. I'd say that >50% of the slides I see now are claudeslop.

One of the coolest thing about surfers is their skin microbiome diversity: Surfers from all over the world have skin microbiomes that resemble more like other surfers rather than non-surfers living in their own area. They also carry ocean associated bacteria found commonly on whales and dolphins. I wonder if this skin microbiome shift is felt by the marine animals.

Shoutout to the people that do the awkward little jog when a car lets them cross the street.
You are not moving any faster, but the effort is beautiful. I see you. I respect you.

Apple booked 50 business class seats daily for SFO → Shanghai on United in the pre-COVID 19 era
They were spending ~$35m per annum to get manufacturing design engineering (MDE) teams from Cupertino to supervise the manufacturing engine in China.
They flew everyone from process engineers to designers to operations managers to reliability engineers on-site to help ramp up production of various Apple devices.
In fact, United began flying SFO → Chengdu daily from 2015 because Apple guaranteed it would take almost all of the 36 business class seats on that flight. Chengdu is where 50% of the world’s iPads are made!
Back in 2019, Apple was United’s largest corporate account. Apple was spending ~$150m per annum with United 🤯
Apple began manufacturing efforts in China in 1997 when Jobs came back into power. Apple’s peak CAPEX in China was ~$55bn per annum.
The scale of Apple’s supply chain in China insane: There are 1.4 million employed on production lines by Apple’s manufacturing partners like Foxxconn!
Source for the above: Patrick McGee’s book “Apple in China” and Dan Wang’s “Breakneck”. I’ve read both these year & they provide a fascinating POV into China’s manufacturing prowess.

The decline of beauty in everyday life shows up in even the smallest things, like tickets, where we’ve let our obsession with efficiency win out over personality and artistic expression.
Like the ticket from the Guggenheim Museum in New York, which I've shared in the first photo. It's an iconic building that could have so easily inspired a beautiful ticket design, but they opted for the most economical option instead.
Each example of this decline isn't a big deal, but the world becomes less charming and enchanted when people stop caring about craftsmanship.
For some alternatives, scroll through the photos. The second one shows old Japanese train tickets, the third one shows an old circus ticket, and the fourth one is a World Series ticket from 2002, which felt magical when I got to hold one as an eight-year-old.
So yes, there’s definitely been a decline. And maybe we’re okay with it! But it’s worth remembering that this decline isn’t inevitable. There is another way.
