Thanks @ArturNadol7566
‼️If you care about what happened to ☘️Ireland’s banks, the role of the Big Four accounting firms and the treatment of whistleblowers, please read this extraordinary account and share it widely.‼️
🔹Brendan Lyon’s experience in Australia should ring alarm bells throughout Ireland.
🔹Consider @KPMG audit relationships with AIB & Irish Nationwide Building Society, its subsequent involvement in the liquidation of Anglo Irish Bank/IBRC, and the extraordinarily intertwined relationships between banks, auditors, lawyers, regulators, actuaries and other professional advisers throughout the Quinn/Anglo/IBRC debacle.
🔹Then consider Ireland’s tracker mortgage scandal, the concealed credit facilities and liquidity arrangements that warrant investigation, the fraudulent sales of complex financial derivatives to SMEs, disputed mortgage documentation and the serious questions surrounding the legality of repossessions and enforcement proceedings.
🔹Where were the professional gatekeepers?
🔹Who was auditing whom, advising whom, investigating whom and subsequently defending whose interests in litigation?
🔹And why have so many of these matters escaped comprehensive, genuinely independent scrutiny?
🔹Brendan’s experience raises profoundly important questions about professional independence, institutional accountability and what happens when someone challenges the financial representations of powerful institutions.
🔹These questions are every bit as relevant in Ireland as they are in Australia.
🔹Please follow @lyon_brendan and share his story widely.
🔹If we genuinely care about the rule of law, the integrity of our banking system and the protection of whistleblowers, we cannot continue to treat these scandals as isolated episodes.
🔹The public deserves to know not only what the banks did, but what their professional advisers knew, when they knew it, and what they did about it.
🔹And consider the Quinn/Anglo saga. It has all the ingredients of an extraordinary financial thriller:
-billions in disputed liabilities,
-offshore structures in Madeira & Cyprus,
-contested guarantees & share pledges,
- alleged forged signatures & composite documents
-auditors, actuaries, lawyers, regulators, -political interventions,
-bitter litigation and questions ignored about the integrity of crucial documentation.
🔹And, just like Brendan Lyon’s story, at its heart lie enormous financial black holes and deeply troubling questions about how they arose, who knew about them, who was responsible for exposing them and whether the full truth was ever established.
BIG 4 WHISTLEBLOWER AND THE 10 BILLION HOLE
Brendan Lyon @lyon_brendan hit send: I am sick of being bullied.
KPMG Australia answered the way every caring employer does, with a conduct investigation into the man who wrote it.
On 22 October I joined the @TransparencyTF Zoom meeting and heard the story of Brendan Lyon, a whistleblower. I attached his slides for anybody interested in this fascinating story.
That email went to Michael Pratt, head of NSW Treasury, on 19 November 2020, with a suggestion to grow up or tell the truth. Brendan Lyon was a KPMG partner checking a new state rail company called TAHE, and he says Treasury's numbers were essentially made up and the real budget hole was around $10 billion. A rounding error, the kind anyone makes with a calculator and a deadline.
Brendan Lyon says Michael Pratt told him to correct the errors or delete every mention of Treasury modelling, which was none of his business. Emails Brendan Lyon gave Parliament also show Michael Pratt telling KPMG's senior partners that they had a partner out of control and that he expected action. Peer review, Treasury style, is an email to the boss.
Transport Secretary Rodd Staples, who backed Brendan Lyon, was dismissed that month. Brendan Lyon alleges bullying, reprisals and pointless disciplinary processes followed, and says Gary Wingrove, then chief executive of KPMG Australia, removed him from the partnership in April or May 2021. Gary Wingrove became KPMG's global chairman and chief executive on 1 October 2026, and nothing says lessons learned like a bigger desk.
A 2022 parliamentary inquiry found it was highly inappropriate for NSW Treasury to instruct Brendan Lyon to amend his report. The Audit Office of NSW also reported that 23 reports, 1,023 pages, arrived around midnight on the morning the state accounts were signed. Light bedtime reading.
Brendan Lyon's slides explain the bigger picture. Australia lets accounting firms alone run as partnerships of up to 1,000 people, with a legal cap on what they pay when they lose a damages case. Since 2007 the cap covers any service sold for profit, including consulting by people who are not accountants, so a shield for accountants now fits anyone with a business card.
Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG earned about $9.8 billion in Australia in 2025, and by Brendan Lyon's count about 75% of it sits under that cap. Risk management has never looked so relaxed.
Brendan Lyon built a scenario to show the maths. A firm earns $15 million valuing a super asset that is hard to sell, gets it wrong, and members lose $100 million. The court finds the firm half to blame, the cap trims the award from $50 million to $20 million, insurance pays $19 million and the firm covers a $1 million excess, which is pocket change for a good week.
Members are left $30 million short. Spread over 1,000 partners, that is $15,000 each in fees up front and $1,000 each in damages later.
Brendan Lyon says disciplinary records at Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand @Chartered_Accts, known as CA ANZ, show no enforcement against any Big Four firm or partner from 2013 to 2026. Policing yourself works wonders when nobody is looking.
ASIC @asic_connect chair Sarah Court told Parliament in September that ASIC is reviewing 551 complaints about the Big Four and that its powers reach individual auditors only. On 14 October the Australian Financial Review reported that ASIC found EY and PwC approved a combined $80 billion of unlisted super investments without enough evidence. Reviewing is such a brave word.
Brendan Lyon is challenging the cap in the NSW Supreme Court against CA ANZ and the Professional Standards Council of New South Wales, which approved the scheme. He started a fundraiser for his costs and on 7 August won an order limiting what he can be made to pay CA ANZ to $25,000. CA ANZ says its scheme protects consumers through insurance backed compensation, which is a fine name for a shield.
Trial is set for 22 June 2027, which leaves plenty of time for more complaints.
Brendan Lyon says he lost his partnership for checking the numbers. In his example, getting them wrong costs a partner $1,000.

🔹If a solicitor's failure to attend court can prompt judicial consideration of a professional misconduct referral,
then what should follow where a litigant produces documentary evidence suggesting
🔹that legal representatives failed to place material facts before the court,
🔹disregarded instructions or
🔹acted amid undisclosed conflicts?
The answer cannot depend on whether the alleged misconduct inconveniences the administration of justice or whether it disadvantages an individual litigant.
🔹Professional obligations exist to protect clients, the courts and the administration of justice alike.
🔹The integrity of the justice system is not measured solely by how firmly judges respond when solicitors fail to appear.
🔹It is also measured by how effectively the system responds when litigants allege, with supporting evidence, that the professionals entrusted with protecting their rights have failed them.

What we do, @NoelMcgree, is not disgusting. We do our State and its citizens a service by speaking out about wrongdoing, failures and matters of public concern.
What is truly disgraceful is the treatment so many whistleblowers receive for having the courage to speak up.
Instead of being protected and thanked, many find themselves subjected to complaints, disciplinary proceedings and retaliation.
The problem is not the whistleblowers. The problem is how they are treated.

Interesting report by @kenfoxe revealing that the HSE overpaid staff by more than €30 million between 2023 and 2025.
But what about staff who have been underpaid or denied payments to which they were entitled?
I have raised serious concerns over the years about healthcare workers who left or retired without receiving holiday premium payments, and more recently about the non-implementation of the HSE Injury at Work Allowance scheme in a Section 38 voluntary organisation.
The figures in this article relate only to directly employed HSE staff.
Is it time for a comprehensive independent audit of payroll practices, underpayments and outstanding staff entitlements across the HSE and Section 38 voluntary organisations?
Accountability must work both ways. Staff should repay genuine overpayments, but employers must be equally accountable for identifying and correcting underpayments.
Healthcare workers deserve nothing less.

Maybe @HMcEntee doesn’t know the difference between sending a confidential whistleblower’s disclosure to the Commissioner and his solicitor sending a letter. Or she does. Either way this line the Coalition is now spinning is going to get it into deep, deep trouble

As PETI member and Renew Europe’s deputy coordinator, did you attend the 12 Oct 2026 coordinators’ meeting and support or cast a vote against scheduling Petition 1895/2026?
Revenue’s own findings document systematic VAT overcompensation in the broiler sector (averaging ~660%, up to ~1,000% for co-ops in sample periods)—contrary to the EU VAT Directive. This distorts CAP payments, single-market rules, and competition with Northern Ireland producers, harming compliant family farms.
Whistleblowers (a disproportionate share from Ireland) report threats, intimidation and commercial retaliation. Irish citizens deserve a fair hearing of the State’s own records.@AnybodyButBerti @MLorrM @williamhboney1 @celticjulie @Toibin1
