One very positive side effect of this: Our new hires get up to speed faster than before.
End to end prototypes manifest in days instead of weeks on a new team, because the systems lives less in our heads.
Nice reflection by the astute @antonsten
This aligns with my experience. 2026 is one of the most exciting times in my entire career. I feel more empowered than ever before. Things that used to be slow, difficult, or impossible are now almost effortless. If you can articulate your ideas clearly, they can probably exist.
one thing i noticed after a month of calls with designers is a weird generation gap between people who are scared of ai and people who are excited about it
you would expect younger designers to be more into ai, but it’s often the opposite. the most excited people i meet have been in design for 12+ years
designers with about 5 years of experience came into a world that was stable: big design teams, enterprise jobs, high salaries, and a slow process of design systems and jira tasks. ai is a huge risk if you define design work around components. it’s pure production, it needs to be automated, and it was an anomaly from the start
people who started 12+ years ago saw a design world without any of that. small freelance gigs, low pay, and no way to do 3d or animation on your own. but they had a lot of ideas, and that’s why they came. they worked in photoshop cs3 and indesign and downloaded brushes from the internet
now design is going back to what it should be. not a huge layer of production, but meaning, purpose and form

it’s always felt like OpenAI is too focused on winning San Francisco. meanwhile, their competitor Muse is sweeping the rest of the nation and sitting at the top of the app store. this demo is a perfect example of this.
every tech leader wants to show agents booking flights. but more than half of Americans don’t even fly once in a given year. so the primary agent example we keep showing simply doesn’t resonate with half the country.
agent demos should focus on the basics: tax filing, chasing down shipping returns, clearing out inboxes, and bill paying. every day stuff.
sf is very important. especially if you want to win developers. i understand that. but Meta is looking like geniuses focusing on everyone else. and everyone else is a pretty big market. it's the largest one.

if anyone reaches out to you for feedback or advice about design or their careers you should feel FUCKING LUCKY that someone looks up to you.
recently I’ve had so many folks reach out and dm and I take time to jump on calls with all of them because shit is hard. be nice for gods sake.

Astute observations from Mike.
"If you are building a venture-backed software company, I think the answer is once again “do it all.” Just build the whole thing – your moat is the totality of what you’ve built and completely owning the buying center. I fear there is no safety in the middle."

Submitting for review: trycomms.app
For the past month I’ve been using video to brief my agents.
Started with Loom and Supercut. Then I built a drawing tool so the recorder would pick up what I was pointing at.
That spiraled into something completely new:
Comms — show it, say it, send it to any agent.
Most useful so far for handoff, details and bug reports.
Circle the thing, say what you expected, send it.
Open beta on Mac until Oct 1.

My little Thesis Statement on @every is now live! 📜
The French phrase je ne sais quoi loosely translates to "something you can feel, but can't easily explain or label."
I wrote why I think that's relevant for making things in a post-automation age:

Underrated life advice: Just be easy to work with. Show up on time. Do what you said you'd do. Bring solutions, not problems. Never create drama. Be responsive. Be emotionally consistent. Be kind. People will always want to support someone who just makes their life easier.
