Today we published one of the best things I've read on the trans debate. Free of the usual acrimony that surrounds these issues, it's compassionate, clear-eyed, and a partisan only of evidence and reason. By @Edokwin. Check it out: freeblackthought.substack.co…

Today marks the 11th anniversary of my cousin Sam McNeil’s death from heroin after an 8-year addiction battle. He was passionate about sports- he played DB for the Hudson Explorers and loved his Cleveland teams! He was such a positive guy and was loved by everyone fortunate enough to know him. If you or someone you know needs help- Ohio CareLine: 1-800-720-9616

Check to make sure your state’s laws about postmarked ballots. Some states require a postmark to be accepted regardless of arrival date, others, like Florida, don’t accept postmarked ballots, there is a hard deadline and postmark won’t make a difference.
Replying to @baseballot
If you have to mail your ballot on Election Day, take it to the desk inside the post office. They can give you a manual postmark.

Just a few examples of people justifying rioting, looting, and arson in the recent French protests/riots. I can't even ... 😡🤦‍♂️

I've started to think of America's capital markets as our country's equivalent of having a 130 mph average tennis serve. We can do can an incredible number of other things wrong, but somehow stay in the game economically, because because we can just blast money around.

The time has come to raise the housing investment level in this country, just as we did in the 1960s and 1980s. We have a new report out this morning laying out just how high housing production numbers need to go—and for how many years—to dig us out of the shortage.

Since Proposition 40, the so-called Billionaire Tax (a one-time wealth tax), is on the California ballot this November ...

A mini-thread on why "wealth" taxes (which often are forms of unrealized gains taxes) are Bad. In part, on how countries that have tried these have usually abandoned them. xitter.cf/aronro/status/11842846…

"A murky parent company registered in Barbados and whose investors and owners remain shielded from public view ... is the one empowered to work with the Trump admin to handpick members of a 7-member board to control the new joint [Venezuelan] oil enterprise." – @byaaroncdavis
NEW: Trump’s mega Venezuelan oil deal, signed by Hegseth and Rubio, benefits an unknown group of investors and was intentionally crafted to keep the next U.S. president or future leaders of Venezuela from undoing it. @propublica saw the secret contract: propublica.org/article/trump…

D+5 generic ballot, which is fun, also quite broad agreement on what would explain GOP loss of Congress if it happens. Just 12% of Republicans selected not passing the SAVE Act.

Hey, good news! I just simulated the season and there's still a scenario where the Eagles can win the NFC East with a 4-12-1 record.

Recent prescriptions and policies would have us judge research by non-evidentiary standards, e.g. presumed political impact and scholar identity. In a new essay, Tom Clark and I argue empirical claims should instead be evaluated based on evidentiary strength. We outline a framework for judging evidence, and show its usefulness by revisiting high-profile scholarly disagreements spanning policing, political violence, election administration, and terrorism, before critiquing non-evidentiary approaches. We also argue social science needs a culture that is hospitable to critique—rather than one which condemns critics as “bullies”—if quality standards are to be upheld. dropbox.com/scl/fi/fsgpflron…

"Where Marx went wrong is that in a capitalist society, as long as you're willing to take risks, you have the chance to create wealth that didn't exist before. And while you create that wealth, the overall standard of living in society can rise too." – @gelunding

"Remember: MOST people are good. And good not because it benefits them but because we humans innately want to help each other."
I wanted to share a story about the GOOD in people. I was flying back from Charlotte with my older son on Sunday night. I checked myself in through the American Airlines app hours before the flight. But I could not get it to check him in. I forgot about it. (He was playing soccer so I was distracted.) We got to the airport about an hour before the flight. Tried to get his boarding pass at a kiosk. Wouldn’t let us. Panicked I went to the “priority” desk at American. The woman couldn’t do it either. Called her supervisor. No answer. Went and looked for a supervisor. No dice. Another employee suggested she call the gate agent. She did. The gate agent overrode things and we were able to print him a boarding pass. This was at 7:30. Flight left at 7:50. We made it to the gate at 7:40. The gate agent who had helped us said “We didn’t want you and your son to be separated!” We got on the plane. We were back in DC by 9 pm after a VERY long weekend of soccer and logistics. Remember: MOST people are good. And good not because it benefits them but because we humans innately want to help each other. We need to never forget that. And extend as much grace to other people as we hope they extend to us.
