Something as simple as lichen on tree bark, when observed under the microscope, can reveal new and interesting micro-shapes, landscapes and colours!

In 2020, I took a small piece of moss from under a park bench along the canal in Ottawa and put it in a bottle. I've done nothing to it and it's been growing ever since.

NEW PAPER: Ever wondered why insects fly in all sorts of crazy patterns around lights at night? So did we! We set about recording flying insects to work out what's going on. I'll summarise what we found in this 🧵. Spoiler: We don't think they confuse lights with the moon.

Another oceanic squid (Walvisteuthis jeremiahi) - a small species of cephalopod belonging to the family Onychoteuthidae. This juvenile flashed bright colors at me the entire time I photographed it.

We had terrible winds yesterday. No damage but I did find these cute little lichen bouquets all over the place. :)

Now this is a very good piece of wood. (The bluish hue is from a fungi.)

Picked up this heavy rock at the beach this summer. Looks like granite inside? I know nothing. And that's part of the fun of having a rock collection.

It's December in #PEI. I'm wearing a T-shirt. I am half happy and half sad. Mostly, confused.

I think I want to create a YouTube docuseries similar to what Louis Theroux does, without needing to travel everywhere to line up interviews. I'm lazy and I'm perimenopausal. It could work virtually, right? Could it? There are so many people I want to talk to... #notapodcast

It's been a while, hasn't it? Twitter has changed, I've changed, the world has changed. I'm in cybersecurity these days. I still haven't unpacked my microscopes. I finally watched Handmaid's Tale. I've been feeding chickadees and chopping wood. Maybe I'm back?

Extraordinary video in which a Jewish student highlights the extent of antisemitism on campus at @MIT. Elite universities and their DEI bureaucracies have failed us.

The 23andme news is making its rounds on LinkedIn. I'm reading that genetic data is valuable because foreign adversaries could use this type of data for the development of #DNA -targeted biological weapons. Hey #science Twitter/X, is this even possible or is it fear mongering?

The best test to gauge AI progress shouldn't be based on how smart it is. The best test should be, "can it draw like a child?". This is what it thinks a 2 yr old can draw. It can't draw like a child, yet. And imo, it won't have made much progress until it can. #ChatGPT #dalle

The ant and aphid relationship is really fascinating. From what I've read, the ants protect the aphids from predators so that they can then "milk" the aphids for the Sao they consume. Soooo cool to see this in my yard today!
