Rudolf Steiner’s lecture on “The Mission of Anger” and Its Tie to Prometheus and Zeus Anger is not your enemy. According to Steiner, it is your teacher. The human beings 4 fold nature:
Physical body, Etheric (life) body, Astral body (the vehicle of pleasure, pain, and desire), and the "I," the inner name only you can speak. The physical body's laws decompose it at death. The etheric body holds them back while you live. The Ego:
The Ego passes from life to life, working on the three lower bodies. Where it transforms them, they become Spirit-Self, Life-Spirit, and Spirit-Man. Redi showed that life comes only from life. Likewise, soul and spirit come only from soul and spirit. Each life is the result of earlier lives and the start of later ones. Percepts and concepts
Percepts come through the senses. Look at a rose, then turn away. The inner image that remains is a concept, a possession of your soul. That is where the sentient soul begins. The three members of the soul Sentient soul (astral body): inner images, sympathies, antipathies. Intellectual soul (etheric body): reflects and judges. Consciousness soul (physical body): turns inner experience into knowledge of the outer world. The Ego created each one unconsciously. It is a two-edged sword. It must grow rich in itself, but if it hardens and cuts itself off, it impoverishes itself. It must become independent and selfless at once. The mission of anger:
Anger arises in the sentient soul while the Ego is still dormant. It educates you before your judgment matures. It teaches independence, because the Ego stands against what offends it.
It teaches selflessness, because swallowed anger deadens ego-feeling. Unchecked, it degrades into rage that serves egoism. Purified, it turns into love. Anger is a passion to be transmuted, not dodged. Righteous anger is a necessary stage. Now the myth Prometheus
His name means "forethought." He was a Titan who sided with humanity when the gods wanted them kept weak. He gave humans speech, writing, knowledge, and fire, stolen from Olympus in a hollow fennel stalk. Every gift enriches the Ego. He hands humanity its selfhood. The insult
He tricked Zeus at the sacrifice. Bones wrapped in glistening fat, the good meat hidden under the hide. Zeus chose the bones. The king of the gods was made a fool. And he knew it. The punishment
Zeus took the fire. Prometheus stole it back. So Zeus chained him to a rock in the Caucasus. Every day an eagle tore out his liver. Every night it grew back. Steiner’s view on the myth:
Zeus's wrath chaining Prometheus mirrors how swallowed anger checks the Ego. The secret
In Aeschylus, Prometheus knows a marriage is coming whose child will overthrow Zeus. Zeus threatens torture for the name. Prometheus refuses. Steiner reads the legend as foreseeing Zeus succeeded by one born of a mortal: Christ. Anger transformed into the loving Ego. The god of wrath falls. Love takes the throne.

George Gurdjieff’s Self Remembering: An Ultimate Guide — Richard Ruach SELF OBSERVATION: THE FOUNDATION Self Observation is the prerequisite to Self Remembering. It is the study of the human machine and its three cylinders: intellectual, emotional, and moving. This is Personality: the human mask shaped by heredity and the outside world. (More detail in the comments.) Self Remembering is NOT Self Observation. It rests on a different teaching: the distinction between Personality and Essence. ESSENCE is the “Divine spark,” the eternal element that passes from life to life. Personality is formed in this lifetime; Essence is perennial. Self Observation is a technique. Self Remembering is a state of consciousness and being. THE FOUR LEVELS OF CONSCIOUSNESS Gurdjieff describes four levels: 1. Sleep. 2. Ordinary, everyday consciousness. 3. The awakened state (sometimes called Self Remembering). 4. Objective consciousness. The technique for entering Self Remembering is DIVIDED ATTENTION (see diagram in comments). DIVIDED ATTENTION: THE KEY Imagine someone looking at a tree. An ordinary person sees the tree, but may not notice the representations and associations arising within them. Divided attention means remaining aware of your inner world while also attending to your surroundings. Consciousness becomes BIDIRECTIONAL rather than moving in one direction; eventually, it can become MULTIDIRECTIONAL. For example, imagine suddenly becoming sad while walking down the street, without knowing why. Through Self Observation, you would recognize why the sadness arose. THE SECRET THIRD THING With sustained practice, you may sense a “secret third thing” (Essence) observing the process: the arising and entering of an impression. This is neither thought nor emotion. You are turning away from the human machine (Persona). RECOGNIZING SELF REMEMBERING P.D. Ouspensky describes its “flavor” as similar to being a child visiting a place you have never been before—not nostalgia or the “inner child.” The state is slippery: you can enter it and lose it without noticing. Someone speaks to you, and suddenly it is gone. Do not force or manipulate it. Remain as natural as possible. Richard Ruach offers another technique, ROLLING ATTENTION, to maintain the state. See the comments for my notes and his fuller explanation. THE GENIUS MIND AND THE FILTER A genius can filter out distractions and concentrate on one thought. A chess master, for example, filters out bad moves rather than calculating every possibility. But an extremely strong filter can disconnect you from reality. Intellectual people therefore struggle with Self Remembering. The aim is not to strengthen the filter, but to LOOSEN it, allowing consciousness to expand and experience the world. This may help explain why geniuses sometimes have breakthroughs while dreaming. THE EFFECTS OF SELF REMEMBERING The area of consciousness expands and more impressions enter. You notice things previously overlooked; perhaps you hear something new or the world seems more vivid. When looking at another person, an image or reaction may arise within you. Ruach describes this as not coming from you, but as that person’s internal world. He calls it “Extra-Normal Phenomenological Perception” (like telepathy, but not exactly). Do NOT get caught up in this. Thinking about “having telepathy” can pull you out of Self Remembering. BEING-PARTKDOLG-DUTY: THE DEATH OF THE OLD SELF Everything in the human machine has arrived from an external place. Through Self Remembering, you attempt to draw solar force into the machine and reorganize it into something else. Gurdjieff calls this “Being-Partkdolg-Duty” in Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson. This is death: the old self is replaced by Essence. It brings to mind Christ’s words: “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” — John 3:3

Rudolf Steiner's Blossoming and Withering exercise for developing supersensible perception Steiner taught that this exercise cultivates a kind of higher sensory tools and organs in the soul and spiritual body. Through it, the soul world, the so-called "Astral plane," begins to dawn for the student, and growth and decay stop being vague impressions. The exercise: 1. Observe a living, growing plant.
Take in its form and details with the greatest possible precision. Do not rush into interpretation or emotion. Simply see it fully. 2. Become still.
Only after you have observed it completely, surrender yourself to whatever sensations and feelings arise from the plant itself. 3. Switch to a withering or decaying object.
Repeat the same process: observe precisely first, then become still and let the feelings come. What you are looking for: Steiner distinguished the inner experience of the two. A sunrise-like feeling accompanies growth. A moonrise-like feeling accompanies withering. The essential principle: Do not manufacture a feeling. Do not decide beforehand what something should evoke. The feeling must arise from your soul's own encounter with the particular object. The test: If you experience the same feeling regardless of what you observe, you may be imposing your own mood rather than perceiving what is actually before you. This exercise requires repetition. Steiner emphasized that these perceptions become increasingly vivid through continued practice, alternating your attention between growth and decay. Patience is paramount.

Rudolf Steiner on Courage and Fearlessness on the Path of Initiation What he teaches specifically in his book Knowledge of the Higher Worlds and Its Attainment: Courage and fearlessness are qualities a candidate must bring to the path of initiation. The student should deliberately seek out situations that develop these qualities, systematically, as part of esoteric schooling. He adds that ordinary life is itself an excellent school for this, perhaps the best. The inner mindset he teaches: When facing danger, the student must be able to look at it calmly and get through difficulties without wavering. At the moment of danger, he is to summon the thought that his fear serves no purpose, that he shouldn’t have it at all, and that he should think only about what needs to be done. The goal is that, in situations that once caused fear, becoming afraid or losing heart becomes impossible, at least in his deepest feelings. Why this matters: He says this self-education develops specific forces needed for initiation, comparing it to how the body needs nerve force to use the senses: the soul needs the force that only courageous, fearless natures develop. So, in his framework, it is not a moral decoration. It builds a capacity upon which higher schooling depends. One thing worth noticing: The exercise isn’t to suppress fear or feel nothing. It redirects attention from fear to the next right action, which is why it pairs so well with equanimity. Real courage means feeling the fear, experiencing the adrenaline, and composing oneself. This also ties into the encounter with “The Two Guardians at the Threshold.” The chapter on the Guardian of the Threshold says there are two Guardians, a lesser and a greater, and carries a warning not to cross the Threshold until you feel entirely free from fear and ready for the highest responsibility. Know that I am paraphrasing. Read the book yourself for more practical results.

This is how I explain Catholic Purgatory: When contemplating Kamaloka, or post-death purification, there are many eye-opening facts, of which you would likely not be aware at first sight. It is not right to think of the process as something in which you are merely put in front of what you already seem to know. If one were to look at the thing correctly, it should become apparent that in this process, when the I faces its desires, which are derived from the sensible world and not the spiritual world, the I does not only encounter what it already knows. No, the I begins to penetrate a dark cloud of desires, which like a disease spreads itself before Devachan, the I not knowing the extent of the damage that it has inflicted upon itself, the world and its souls. So it is like with a disease that a man has not experienced before. He may have heard men speak of it, he possibly even tried imagining it, but he has not experienced it. It is then, in Kamaloka, that man pierces the veil and, as through a healing fever, experiences catharsis macrocosmically. In the sensible world man has experienced a miniature version of this catharsis on one or the other occasion. It is when we are plagued by disease, regular sickness, that we begin to contemplate what and how much we had before, or indeed how easily we could have prevented this sickness that is so troubling to us now. By force we are removed from regular life, and it is here that we discover within ourselves a real desire: to have lived life well. So it is in Kamaloka. We are removed from the life we thought we knew, and begin to experience the truth from which we thought we could hide. It contains an experience which is comparable to the state in which we find ourselves when we learn a truth in regular life of which we did not have the slightest hunch. There are things we come to know, so foreseeable that only a fool would not have considered them. The woman whom you abandoned out of good, or maybe only apparently good, reasoning might have had the most genuine love for you, more than any other you ever had after. And there are secrets that come to light, so absurd that we did not consider them. Your greatest enemy might have been praying for you, while you desired nothing more than to end his life. So you are removed from your earthly life in Kamaloka, seeing from their eyes and feeling from their heart what your I's desires, derived from the sensible world and not the spiritual world, have caused them: your loved ones, your enemies and everyone in between. You live your life again, backwards and three times as fast, knowing what will happen. It is among the greatest pains to be chained, seeing the most brutal tragedies unfold, knowing: “I could have prevented all.” It is here that the I discovers within itself a spiritual desire: “I will make it good.”

People wonder if hypnosis is real or possible. Why don't you test it? Start observing yourself, every second, minute and hour. See what triggers thoughts, emotions - externally (in the world) and internally (in the mind) You set yourself the challenge, you go do this. You then find that you slip into weird forgetfullness, that you got caught up in your thoughts or imagination. Suddenly hours will go by, and you will forget that you were observing yourself. You realize it is hell on earth to observe one's self consciously, we want to slip out into unconscious states. Now if you manage to record these unconscious/autopilot moments of your day, you will find that you are highly suggestable, and in hypnosis via your phone, social media and or people around you. That is the hardest thing to admit though. We will never admit we are not conscious; as that would be uncomfortable to admit that we are in constant states of forgetting and falling out of our own reality. But if you can admit it, and see it for what it is then you are on your way to atleast understanding how to escape this prision of compelled actions/thoughts. To escape you first must know what you are escaping from. However better words would be, how to leave and enter at will. We want to analyze how these mind states work, how our "I's" (identities) shift at a switch of a bad emotion, or something that happens to us. One day someone wishes to hand you their items, and be selfless, the next day that same person comes back and fights you for those items back. You see how your mind works, it is almost constantly under trance states of consciousness everyday. Now hypnosis uses this through adding suggestions through relaxed (theta) states of mind, in often times like entertainment, repetition, etc. (Attention is currency, win it back)

Occult Forces behind Europe and the Anglo-Saxon / Germanic Epoch 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇩🇪 Dr. Rudolf Steiner describes how the folk soul of each European people works into a different part of the human soul. (The German “ICH” = “I”) For clarity, I will add the following numbers in brackets behind each part of the nine-fold human being: Physical Body (1) Etheric Body (2) Astral Body (3) Sentient Soul (4) Intellectual Soul (5) Consciousness Soul (6) Spirit Self (7) Life Spirit (8) Spirit Man (9) 🇮🇹🇪🇸 In the Italian, the folk soul “flows directly into the feeling [sentient] soul (4)”, and the Spanish culture is “similar and related to this”. Note that the Sentient Soul (4) forms one unit with the Astral Body (3). 🇫🇷 In the Frenchman it is “the result of a direct interaction between the folk soul and what is called the intellectual soul. (5)” 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 In the Englishman, “the English national character, through the soul of consciousness (6), is directed outward.” (See British Empire) Note that the Consciousness Soul (6) intimately cooperates with the Spirit Self (7), the Spirit Self (7) being the transformed Astral Body (3). 🇩🇪 In the German, the folk soul works directly with the self, with the “I”. (4,5 & 6) 🇷🇺 And of the Russian he says: “the national soul hovers above the individual as a spiritual entity.” This is the order of the human soul: Sentient Soul (4), Intellectual Soul (5), Consciousness Soul (6), the I (4,5 & 6), and above it, that which is yet to come. (Spirit Self, 7) In German, Dr. Steiner names the Intellectual Soul (5) “Verstandes- oder Gemütsseele”. “Verstand” is understanding, but there is no English equivalent of “Gemüt”, which is the warmth of the soul. Ever since the year 1413, we live in the fifth post-Atlantean epoch, which is the Anglo-Saxon / Germanic epoch - its task being the development of the Consciousness Soul. (6) Note that the fourth post-Atlantean epoch was the Graeco-Roman cultural epoch - which was concerned with developing the Intellectual Soul (5), the center of the nine-fold human being. (1234 - 5 - 6789) Christ incarnated during this epoch because it marks the center of history. Christianity was born within the Hebrew Soul, Greek Spirit and Roman Body. The fourth epoch allowed us to develop the 5th part (Intellectual Soul), while the fifth epoch allows us to develop the 6th part of the nine-fold human being - thereby preparing us for the Spirit Self (7). Dr. Steiner says in 1918: “The people of the English-speaking world today are particularly predisposed to developing the consciousness soul” (6), “they are the representative people of this fifth post-Atlantean epoch.” The Englishman bears the consciousness soul (6) outward, into the world. (See British Empire, America, and the rise of the English Language) The German folk soul works upon the I. (4,5 & 6) In the centuries leading up to 1413, we begin to see many important German Individualities spring up: Hildegard von Bingen, Albertus Magnus, Mechthild von Magdeburg, Meister Eckhart Then, in the year 1413, the fifth post-Atlantean epoch begins - we are to develop our Consciousness Soul (6). The German Christian Rosenkreutz, being born in 1378, turns 35 years old. Within a human’s life span, the 7-year period ranging from ages 35-42 is the period of the Consciousness Soul (6). From thereon we see the German folk soul produce giants like Paracelsus, Jakob Böhme and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Furthermore: Nikolaus von Kues, Johannes Reuchlin, Johannes Trithemius, H. C. Agrippa Gerhard Dorn, Valentin Weigel, Heinrich Khunrath, Michael Maier Friedrich Schiller, J. G. Fichte, Novalis, F. W. J. Schelling Immanuel Kant, G. W. F. Hegel, Friedrich Nietzsche By what force does a country of Germany’s size rise to the 3rd highest GDP? Besides, the 1st ranking country, America, was created by British settlers, and the 5th ranking is the United Kingdom. The Dutch VOC also comes to mind.

Love is one of the greatest protections against demonic influences. To understand why, we must first understand what happens within us. Most people do not think as independently as they imagine. Our thoughts are constantly shaped by fear, desire, public opinion, and the environment around us. We believe we are thinking. Often, we are merely reacting. Dr Steiner therefore placed enormous importance on learning to master one's own thinking. Choose a thought deliberately. Hold it steadily. Follow its inner logic. Do not allow the mind from wandering. Why does this matter? Because an uncontrolled mind is easily influenced. When entering an environment filled with dishonesty, cruelty, selfishness or destructive behaviour, we can unconsciously begin adopting the thoughts, emotions and attitudes around us. The answer is not to withdraw from the world. The answer is to develop an inner life that does not merely reflect its surroundings. Love turns our attention away from ourselves and toward another being. Instead of asking what we can gain, we become genuinely interested in the other person's existence. This transforms how we perceive reality. When someone wrongs you, fear sees an enemy. Pride sees an insult. Anger sees only faults. But love allows you to see the whole human being. You can recognise their weaknesses without becoming consumed by hatred. Love is a force of cognition. It allows us to enter the reality of another being rather than viewing everything through the lens of our own desires. This is the deeper meaning of the Christ impulse. Not simply belief. Transformation. The gradual overcoming of selfishness through freely chosen love. As Scripture says: "Perfect love casteth out fear." - 1 John 4:18 But love must be strengthened by disciplined thinking. Let daily meditation shape your thinking, feeling and actions. Over time, inner order replaces inner chaos. Consciousness replaces reactivity. Freedom replaces compulsion. The goal is not to become afraid of darkness. The goal is to become so inwardly awake that darkness no longer determines who you become. Do not focus on protecting yourself from the world. Develop so much love, clarity, and self-mastery that you no longer become like what surrounds you. "The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." - John 1:5

In the early 20th century, psychology explored the idea that the human mind is not a single, unified ego, but consists of multiple psychological and physiological states. (Sigmund Freud, William James, and Pierre Janet, etc) G. I. Gurdjieff, independent of German psychology and philosophy, arrived at a similar understanding through his own system, arguing that man is not one, but a multitude of competing "I's". What I mean is that Gurdjieff arrived at certain german ideas without being able to read german.

Descartes, Bacon, Freemasonry, Rosicrucianism and the Revelation of Modern Rationalism < French philosopher René Descartes, who had gone searching for the fratres RC, was himself accused in Catholic Paris of being a Rosicrucian, “how could this be?” responded the founder of the mechanistic philosophy “all the world knows they are invisible!” > -Tobias Churton, The True History of the Rosicrucians (Documentary) Dr. Steiner, in Riddles of Philosophy, places Descartes at the turning point of what he calls the age of self-consciousness. The Greek still experienced thought as something perceived, as he perceived the world around him. The philosophers at the turn of this age no longer do so. Descartes must bring forth thought from his own I, and justify it from within. It is here that Dr. Steiner classifies the founders of modern thought: “Contrary to Bacon of Verulam, who pointed toward the bricks of the building, Descartes (Cartesius) and Spinoza turned their attention toward its plan.” That is, Bacon works with the bricks that he sees, while Descartes struggles to bring forth the plan from within. In German: Bausteine and Bauplan, “Bausteine” meaning “Building Stones.” The use of the word “Building Stones” in context with Francis Bacon is particularly interesting. If you have researched Freemasonry, you should know that there are many Baconian legends surrounding the fraternity, such as the notion that Speculative Masonry was established by Bacon. Dr. Steiner’s wording might have been intended to remind the reader of Freemasonry. There is not enough space to go into the history of the fraternity here, but if you research carefully, you should find many curious relations between Masonry and the ushering in of the “Age of Enlightenment”. And of Descartes in particular Dr. Steiner writes: “The ego in him conquers the right to recognize its own being through the radical doubt directed against the entire world.” The German is “erkämpft”, meaning “fought for” and won, through struggle. In Germany, during the winter of 1619, while Descartes was still searching for the Fratres R.C., he had three dreams in one night, through which he believed the Spirit of Truth had descended upon him. In his notebook he wrote that on this day, “full of enthusiasm”, he had found “the foundations of a wonderful science”. The father of Modern Rationalism received the basis of his system not through doubt, but revelation.

Wondering which mystics you could read based on your own experience? Here are some, classified by Dr. Steiner according to what remains active in them during mystical experience. A: Heart and Brain (NEOPLATONISM) Iamblichus, Plotinus, Scotus Erigena B: Heart (CATHOLICISM) Francis of Assisi C: Brain (IDEALISM) G.W.F. Hegel
NEOPLATONISM Such mystics, who have experiences of the heart and the brain, we actually find only if we go quite far back in history; and we find them among those mystics who, after Christianity was established, attempted to ascend mystically to the divine Self with the help of Greek-Platonic philosophy. These include, for example, the Neoplatonists Iamblichus and Plotinus. In this class too, belongs Scotus Erigena, and if one does not hold too strictly to the definition but admits a mystic in whom the brain experiences outweigh the experiences of the heart, then we may include also Meister Eckhart, These will then form class A; mystics who still admit experiences of brain and heart. I once emailed the last living person to work with Gurdjieff (P. B. Taylor), asking what G might have made of the increase in distractions today. He said G would likely love them, as they're further fuel for self-remembering, further reminders of our robotic nature.
Gurdjieff's idea of man being a "machine" is something worth considering especially in the modern age. More prevelant now, than it was in his time. We live in a world where attention is scattered, emotions are constantly stimulated, and desires are wants given to you by the external world, not from your own inner being. People believe they are expressing their individuality, yet much of their behaviour is simply a reaction to their environment. "Man does not do anything, things just happen to him."
