San Francisco once viewed technology as a civic and consciousness building medium — something that could enable collective cultural expression. In @palladiummag, @notscottmoore and I trace how that spirit atrophied — and how artists might help renew it.
Once a sanctuary for art and invention, Silicon Valley has become co-opted by bureaucracy and disbelief.
Its renewal depends on restoring faith in creation itself.

We would just get BerghainMan.
My experience partying all night at Berghain in Berlin made me think of how we're lacking this experience in the San Francisco tech scene. We can literally become the coolest, most tasteful social scene on Earth if we had our version of Berghain, but better. So let's build it. The best aspect of Berhain is how they select who gets in. The club has a vibe and atmosphere, and if you aren't wearing the right clothes or have the right demeanor, you don't get in. That's how you cultivate a tasteful crowd. We can improve on this by only letting in high agency, talented operators in the tech scene who can still pull off dope outfits, so no geeks. SF is in dire need of late night venues, and Berghain goes until 8am. That's a little too crazy for high net worth operators who are changing the world so we could do something like 2am. Berghain also is kinda dark and in a weird building so we'd put the club in a SoMa corporate office that we convert to speakeasy or barcade vibe. Maybe add a quiet area for people to bring their laptops and work? I honestly feel like we're improving on the Berghain form here, especially by swapping out the crowd of weird partiers in inappropriate clothes (or lack there of) with insanely cracked founders and engineers. I'm super stoked about this idea, SF tech could really run the dopest parties on the planet.

Scaling Intelligence: Modal x Gray Area AI Commissions opens NEXT Wednesday, October 28 at Gray Area.
13 artists debut new work built with AI and large-scale cloud computing, moving between scales that rarely meet: a satellite’s planetary view beside a microbial colony, the inside of a neural network opening onto forests and watersheds, a day of visitor conversation becoming a creature’s memory.
Rather than using AI to make more of the same, these artists treat it as a translation layer, letting intelligences of vastly different sizes and speeds sense one another.
@colin_odonnell and Justine Sun Dela Cruz’s “What is it like to be a river?” invites visitors to connect with nature through AI. With a tactile interface, they can send gentle ripples and shifts in flow back to the river itself, which are sensed and folded into the model in real time.
Drop in and play with nature at opening night!

Have you ever thought of what babies will look like in the future? 👼
This is the central question for Yoon Chung Han’s 'Dreaming Babies: illi'—an interactive, immersive solo exhibition currently on view in the Gray Area Gallery.
Han has brought to life 23 virtual babies, each a special human hybrid with a different chromosomal abnormality.
After undergoing egg retrieval and PGT, Han faced the question of what makes an embryo "normal" and whether those deemed "abnormal" should be discarded. This AI-based installation reimagines the genome not as a site of pathology, but of imagination and mythology. Each chromosome given a name, an alter ego, and a poetic superpower. By naming what society often silences, the work challenges the stigma around disability and genetic difference, dissolving the line between what is considered "normal" and "abnormal" and offering difference as a generative force for new identities, perspectives, and forms of beauty.
Exhibition visits are open during events and by appointment. Shoot us an email to let us know when you’d like to stop by.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

Processing is turning 25 this year! For two decades, the platform has taught generations of artists, designers, and educators how to code and the community behind it is still growing.
Join us this Saturday for an afternoon of hands-on workshops and lightning talks exploring where Processing and p5.js are headed next.
Workshops: 1 – 3 PM:
🎨 Introduction to libprocessing, led by Charlotte McElwain—learn the new experimental WebGPU renderer for Processing, exploring video, particle systems, and PBR rendering in Python. Intermediate–Advanced.
🔤 Working with [Variable] Type in p5.js, led by Ivan Zhao—learn the basics of variable typography and how to animate it on the web with p5.js, from shifting weights and widths to its roots in concrete poetry and kinetic type. All levels; some familiarity with p5.js, Processing, or JavaScript helpful.

See you next month at Gray Area in San Francisco
A double-lecture by Benjamin Bratton (Antikythera) and Marek Poliks (Disintegrator) on how the coming world of trillions of agents and fully automated agentic systems will reconfigure society.
Benjamin Bratton presents Agentworld, a new Antikythera research unit which investigates new frameworks for understanding, modeling and composing the medium-term future of hybrid human-AI societies.
Marek Poliks presents Superdark Factory, a Disintegrator project published as part of the Agentworld Special Issue in the Antikythera Journal. Superdark Factory takes up the future of software production once the human sits outside the loop in fully-automated agentic systems.
