Gorgeous essay by @JonMalesic detailing the ways the hype of AI lets us down. Dear students, it's ok to not seek shortcuts to do the difficult work.

What happens when AI writes poetry? What is AI creativity? Here's my take on literary writing and large language models in an interview with @AnnaSeidel17 for the Napkin Poetry Review. #artificialhumanities napkinpoetryreview.org/inter…

As an academic, the relative silence of the humanities and many social sciences about the future of our world with AI (besides far too many saying "AI is bad" without nuance), is a shame. These are fields with a lot to say about the nature of being human, silent at a key moment.
Serious take: how comes there is such a dominant silence from the humanities on what to expect from / how to shape a society with AIs everywhere.

it’s so lonely being the only one who knows the correct amount of reading to assign students and the correct amount of sociology to apply to literature

There’s a substantial risk to writing programs who refuse to acknowledge genAI’s impact. Far too many adopted unreliable AI detection or are thinking about returning to blue books. Neither works. We owe our students the opportunity to ✍️ naturally and alongside new tools.

My oddly similar copy, which my then-girlfriend @lizrenzetti got jealous of me spending so much time reading and set on fire and threw out the window one night. When DFW saw it during an interview and I explained, he said “that’s so fucking cool”
