News: I'm taking over as co-host of What Really Matters with @wrmead . I’ve been a fan of the show for a long time, and I couldn’t be more excited to join Walter in parsing the news and finding the signal in the noise
In my first episode: the Houthis' widening missile war on Saudi Arabia, the Pentagon's livestreamed-execution plan, Kimberly Guilfoyle's fall, and why Trump's shock-and-awe foreign policy isn't slowing down.
Big thanks to @colossusjeremy and the team @tabletmag for 140+ episodes, and to @HudsonInstitute for giving the show a home.

As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary, we continue to reaffirm our founding principles of liberty, innovation, and peace through strength that continue to shape American leadership on the global stage.
At the Freedom 250 reception in Mumbai, I underscored that these ideals continue to guide us as we deepen U.S.-India ties and advance our shared prosperity through partnership and innovation.
Together, we can secure the prosperity of future generations of Americans and Indians.
Secretary Rubio is right: the people spewing anti-Indian hatred don’t represent the country. The best response is for Americans to say so clearly, like this, and to show up for Indian American neighbors when it matters, as @SecRubio points out.

Beijing’s pressure on India extends from the border to the factory floor.
India might be the focus of China's new export controls on construction machinery.
India is not called out explicitly, but China is now prohibiting certain machinery to "sensitive countries and regions that have disputes with China" 与中国存在争议的敏感国家和地区.
These include:
- Tunnel-boring machines, which China has appeared to limit to India in the past
- High-altitude concrete spraying machines (above 3,000 m altitude), which might be about military construction in the Himalayas

Christianity & National Security convo @ProvMagazine with @bill_drexel @HudsonInstitute discussing religion in China.
The intended mass shooting at an Illinois Hindu temple is horrifying, and downstream of the growing anti-Indian hatred that has been escalating over the last year. Indian Americans deserve to live and worship without fear of racist violence. Such anti-Indian hatred should receive prompt, unequivocal condemnation across the political spectrum.
#BREAKING: Potential Mass Shooting Plot Thwarted in Aurora, Illinois.
Authorities say a 19-year-old allegedly plotted a mass shooting targeting a Hindu place of worship. Police reportedly recovered a rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, body armor and a manifesto expressing white supremacist extremism and hostility toward people of Indian descent.
This comes during Navaratri when thousands of Hindus gather for Garba and also just two weeks after a Hindu temple in Ohio was attacked.
We commend law enforcement for swift action. We also urge the community to stay vigilant and Report any potential threat. Every community deserves to worship without fear.

Beijing doesn’t just persecute dissidents at home, it also works to reach them through international institutions. Its expertise in infiltrating and compromising those institutions is unmatched—but this is a particularly flagrant case of the hollowing out of those institutions, and the world's unwillingness to hold them to account.
What's actually going on in Irkutsk remains unclear, but how Russia handles it may be a grave test of an old pattern of authoritarian crisis mismanagement. Re-upping this article that walks through SARS, HIV blood scandals, Chernobyl: why autocratic regimes bury early warnings and turn accidents into catastrophes.

Thank you @WSJ.
The persecution on Chinese Christians and House Churches reveals a type of institutional risk that does not show up on a spreadsheet for businesses and companies, it cannot be hedged or diversified. For businesses, it often means loss of competitive edge or capital invested.
For Christians like my parents, it means loss of freedom.

🤖 Made with AI
Impressive. This set of talks, along with the new America dot gov website, has the unmistakable feel of an Apple launch event. They're rebooting the federal government as a tech startup. Several observations.
(1) First, with this new AI interface to the entire federal government, if it works as promised, there won't be a single American who can't say their life wasn't helped at least in part by AI, or that the benefits accrued solely to zillionaires. This in itself cannily mitigates anti-datacenter sentiment.
(2) Second, Joe Gebbia and Marco Rubio's talks on simplifying name changes and passport filings introduce a completely new era where the US government is actually launching tangible features that benefit users.
(3) Third, this launch event in and of itself may visibly drive reform. It could become much more important than the State of the Union. Unlike laws, code is user-visible, and can be instantly audited by the public, as Obama found out with the failed obamacare website launch. So: the annual America dot gov event may be substance, whereas SOTU is traditionally optics. I wouldn't be surprised to see the President present at the next one.
(4) Fourth, this kind of event is a perfect example of where tech and red cooperate best. They both hate bureaucracy. Automating paperwork with code reduces the power of statists over both capitalists and nationalists. It's also hard to undo by other admins: once you digitize a process, hard to turn it back to paper.
(5) Fifth, it's an obvious point perhaps, but think about how much influence YCombinator has had in 20 years. From Gebbia's Airbnb joining their 2009 batch to a complete overhaul of the user interface of the US bureaucracy, and thus the US government.
(6) Sixth, this is another take on the network state. The functional part of the US (the network, meaning tech) is merging with and partially reforming the dysfunctional part (the state, meaning bureaucracy) by automating 20th century paper forms.
As a tech startup, there will no doubt be bugs and user issues and so on, but unlike with paper laws those issues will be visible and the code fixes will be verifiable. A new era of AI America. Rooting for them.

Today, President George W. Bush welcomed former political prisoner Pastor Ezra Jin to the Bush Institute.
Pastor Jin was the founding pastor of the Zion Church in Beijing, which grew into one of China’s largest networks of unregistered Christian churches. In October 2025, Pastor Jin and nearly 30 of his fellow Christian leaders were imprisoned by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for broadcasting sermons online after officials shut down the church’s physical location in 2018. He was held for nearly nine months before his release in July.
Pastor Jin and President Bush discussed Pastor Jin’s family, his imprisonment, and the house church movement in China. President Bush spoke about his concern for prisoners of conscience in China, including some he painted in his new book, The Call of Freedom: Pastor Wang Yi, Gulshan Abbas, Joshua Wong, and Jimmy Lai.
So grateful to join @FoxNewsSunday alongside my wife, Grace, and my father-in-law, Pastor Ezra Jin—now free and reunited with our family. Thank you to everyone who helped bring him home, including @ShannonBream, who was indispensable. We will continue to fight or those still in prison.
You watched as his daughter and son-in-law advocated for his release on @FoxNewsSunday after Pastor Ezra Jin and several of his fellow church leaders were rounded up and jailed in China. Their pleas reached the White House and President @realDonaldTrump raised the case with President Xi - Pastor Jin is now free and it was my great privilege to welcome him to @FoxNewsSunday - along with @GraceJDrexel and @bill_drexel - who never gave up hope a miracle could happen.
