Today, October 30th, my dad has been killed in action.
My kind, calm father.
I write it here because I know my dad has many friends in the NAFO community, people who he could rely on for help.
His memory will perdure on this account.
Forever loved and missed.

I want to introduce myself, since I have been inactive for a while in the community.
My name is Diana, my father is currently serving in the Armes Forces of Ukraine, under the 4th Brigade of the National Guard.
I want to tell you what has been going on in the past year:

You dumb fucking Americans...
Democrat, republican, doesn't matter.
The russians are pissing in your mouth and bragging about it via the Trump crime family.
What are you gonna do about it?

Russia is returning to the Ice Hockey World Championships in 2027, despite objections from the International Ice Hockey Federation.
Russia was banned for invading Ukraine, and the war is now more brutal than ever before.
What exactly has Russia done to deserve this?

The Russian national ice hockey team is returning to international competition.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld the appeal filed by the Russian Ice Hockey Federation and lifted the suspension of the national team.
As a result, the Russian national team—hailing from a nation of war criminals and mass murderers—will be eligible to participate in the 2027 World Championship in Germany.

My friend, Sir Patrick Stewart, has passed away.
The fact that I was able to truly call him a friend is insane in itself, but it’s true.
He was a lifelong Huddersfield Town supporter, and through my work with them, we came together.
I would bring him the newest gear, talk to his AMAZING wife Sunny (who loved him so much) and listen to stories.
I got to shuttle the two of them around Sacramento one weekend, and it truly was an incredibly fun time.
Over the years, we would talk every Saturday during soccer season. I would always make sure he was set up (he wasn’t Mr Tech), and then we would watch the match. Afterward, we would always have a 2 man postgame show on the phone, but he hosted and I listened.
I could listen to him read the phone book. He was incredibly and unfailingly kind, always asking about me and my family, especially my USC daughter, as he lived in Los Angeles as well.
I am so sad I didn’t have longer to spend with him, I’m sad I never got to talk to him when the team gets promoted, but I’m so incredibly grateful for the time I DID get to spend with the most unlikely friend I’ve ever had.
I grew up idolizing Captain Picard, but the man behind the Captain was even better. I assure you of that.
I will miss the phone ringing and him saying in his big, bellowing English accent:
“WELL HELLO DAVID”
Yeah, he always called me David, insisted I not call him “Sir”, but I always did. Because he deserved it.
Most of all, I’ll just miss my friend.
Be at peace, Sir Patrick.
Thank you for everything.
PS: I hate 2026

Ukraine has resumed its attacks on Russian oil refineries: the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery in the Samara region—one of the largest in the area—has been targeted.
A major fire is raging at the site, and thick black smoke is rising over the city.

❗️Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) visited the site of a nighttime Russian attack in Kyiv where a civilian was killed. He noted that the world has grown accustomed to the war, yet attacks continue and civilians, as always, are the victims. The actor arrived for a week as part of his work with the UNDP to collect people’s stories and remind donors of the need to support Ukraine, especially ahead of winter. The day before, he spent the night in a Kyiv metro shelter.

What a man. I bought a house in LA in 2020 that had been Patrick Stewart’s just before. He turned up one day to check for mail (there was some) and showed us around our own house.
“This is the best place to sit in the morning. You want to sit in this bit of the garden at 5 pm?”
We spoke about Star Trek, which he called “TNG.” I didn’t mention I’d been obsessed with it as a teen, but a frisson of excitement vibrated through me.
I didn’t like him because he did that (although I did). I liked him because he was Patrick Stewart and Jean-Luc Picard. What a man.
