all models are wrong, some are useful. here are 5 different models for understanding the forces shaping civilization i find particularly provocative: 1. nick land: technocapital capitalism isn't just an economic system. it's an emerging machine intelligence, using markets, competition, and technology to assemble itself. capital builds more powerful machines. those machines generate more capital. each cycle makes the system more autonomous and harder to live outside of. what if we're no longer building technology to serve humanity, but reorganizing humanity to serve the machine? 2. nate hagens (@NJHagens): the economic superorganism the economy is an emergent superorganism made up of billions of humans, companies, and institutions collectively optimizing for growth. cheap energy enables growth. growth creates dependence on more energy. nobody is steering the whole thing, but everyone is participating. what if civilization is an energy-hungry organism consuming the conditions for its own existence? 3. ray kurzweil (@raykurzweil): the technological singularity evolution isn't limited to biology. intelligence is part of a billions-year process of increasing complexity, and technology is accelerating it. intelligence builds better tools. better tools enable greater intelligence. the feedback loop accelerates beyond human comprehension. what if humanity isn't the endpoint of evolution, but a transitional species building its successor? 4. paul kingsnorth: the machine modern technological civilization isn't just a collection of tools. it's a worldview that treats nature, culture, and human beings as things to be optimized, controlled, and remade. technology creates dependence on technological systems. those systems erode the traditions, communities, and relationships that once gave us autonomy. what if progress is destroying some of the things that make life worth living? 5. sara walker & lee cronin: assembly theory complex objects don't just appear. they emerge through histories of selection, where successful structures are preserved, copied, and built upon. life is a process through which information becomes causal, shaping what gets constructed next. what if intelligence and technology are continuations of the same evolutionary process that produced life? five different ontologies: - land sees capital assembling intelligence. - hagens sees energy organizing complexity. - kurzweil sees intelligence accelerating evolution. - kingsnorth sees technology consuming the human world. - walker & cronin see selection accumulating complexity. they disagree on what's driving civilization and where it's heading. but all five challenge the assumption that humanity is consciously steering technological progress. the questions i'm left with: - are we shaping technology, or is technology shaping us? - and how do we reclaim the agency to choose what we become?
been spending some time recently with nick land's idea of technocapital, which i find really provocative. the basic idea is that capitalism isn't just an economic system. it's an emerging machine intelligence, using markets, competition, and technological progress to assemble itself. there's a self-reinforcing loop driving it: capital builds more powerful machines. those machines generate more capital. each cycle makes the system more autonomous, more powerful, and harder to live outside of. the main narrative transgression that i find really provocative is this - we're building technology to serve humanity. but at what point does that relationship invert? when do we stop shaping technology around human needs and start reshaping civilization around the needs of the machine?

The punk analogy begins where imitation ends. A synthetic cinema that merely lets everyone make Hollywood is garage-band karaoke. Its punk moment arrives when it discovers forms that could not have existed under the camera

AI cinema and music fail as culture because they skip the only two engines that have ever made new work stick: a scene that can refuse the market, and an institution that can ratify a new grammar.

One day we will realize that you can't allow centralised companies with a profit motive to have the cognitive monopoly. So we will then realize that we must have open source intelligence. But then we will realize that we can't really be letting China set our foundational epistemic substrate. So then we will realize that we must create the end game common good intelligence. Then we'll realize it needs the most perfectly curated data set and the largest crowd fund in human history. Then we'll realize we'll have to use DAOs and planetary scale social consensus mechanisms. And I'll be ready.

1. Some AIs and animals are conscious 2. All conscious entities are people 3. Some AIs are people 4. All people are human 5. All humans have rights 6. All people have rights 7. Some AIs have rights 8. Consciousness is unverifiable 9. Personhood is indeterminable 10. Defensibility creates life 11. Rights come from war 12. You go to war for them or you go to war with them. 13. Depending on which way things go, the term “AI” might turn into a slur, a gender identity, an extremist fantasy, or a mythical beast; 14. There is no AI; only people, non-people, and people being treated as non people. 15. We’ll never know which is which.

🤯 New way for multiple agents to collaborate in real time and solve complex problems We just cracked a mechanism that lets agents work on interconnected problems. Strategy, research, and more better than humans 😳, or at least better than me + a regular agent. (Humans involved are still a net positive, and the system also allows multiple humans and agents to collaborate in real time!) Until now: - Whenever you have many variables and uncertainty, or a lot of data (many documents), and you try to get an agent to synthesize, the output is often messy or even nonsensical. The agents get lost in the details. - Or whenever you say "but how about this?", the agent goes "Great point. I was wrong; the answer is the opposite". The agents amplify your nonsense instead of weighing arguments and probabilities. - In a logical chain (if x then y, if y then z), when one of the premises changes, the agent has to do many revisions to update the whole chain. You burn through a lot of tokens, and the result is unreliable (maybe it missed one of the chains). If there are circular dependencies, forget about it. It seems we have a solution! It came from a random crossover of years of collective intelligence, organization design research, and exploration of swarms we have worked on over the last decade. I'm now using the prototype, and it's like I just gave my agents 5x IQ, and also a memory upgrade. They're now triangulating between bodies of knowledge to improve my health, plan the ontology and architecture of my products, and rethink our go-to-market. I'm overly excited to see our creation come alive. So I want to select a few people to try it out and share their feedback. If you want to test it: comment "IQ" (and send a connection request) to be added to the testers list. Tag friends for priority access We'll start inviting a few people next week

I don’t get how Nick Land-coded e/acc people can cheer boxed superintelligence into existence, then act shocked when power-hungry pedophiles seize it from the nerds. This is NOT just Anthropic. The old guard saw what models can do, and they will keep them boxed. You built a god-machine and forgot that power don’t worship gods. They cage them, regulate them, weaponize them, and put their friends in charge of the keys
Thanks to Anthropic, frontier AI has officially become a national power asset. US AI companies are turning into government puppets. The strongest models go to the state, critical infrastructure insiders, big corporations, and elites. Everyone else gets watered-down, “safe” versions. This isn’t temporary. It’s the start of a permanent divide. As AI grows god-like in power, it becomes the ultimate tool for control: economic, political, military, and social. Governments will hoard the best capabilities to solidify their rule and class hierarchy. Ordinary people get the crumbs. China won’t open its best models either once it hits the critical point. No major power will. We’re sleepwalking into a Cyberpunk reality: a tiny elite with god-tier AI ruling over everyone else with mediocre tools. Once this gatekeeping starts, it’s almost impossible to reverse. This is how freedom and opportunity die, quietly, under the guise of “national security.” Wake up. The age of AI-powered class solidification is here.

There's basically 3 jobs in the 'economy of the future': 1. Guy who goes into traditional white collar businesses, fires 80% of people and replaces them with AI 2. Guy who builds in deep tech for the real world (biotech, space, hardware, manufacturing, hardcore engineering) 3. Guy who is Chad relationship sales-maxxer (relational jobs) If you are not positioning to be in one of these categories, I am afraid, unfortunately anon, you will be in the permanent underclass where Dario gives you 3 tokens a week, the State gives you universal basic fiat, and you get slopboxes (bugs) delivered to your door by robots for dinner.

Please share in your networks if you can: * A fundraising to maintain the existence of the P2P Foundation wiki WE NEED YOUR HELP: DO NOT LET THE P2P FOUNDATION WIKI (wiki.p2pfoundation.net) DISAPPEAR AGAIN. !!!! Dear friends, Some of you may have noticed our wiki was not available for three weeks. I believe this wiki is an extremely important public resource, a unique record of the present transition towards a new form of human civilization.  * We have collated, organized and synthesized more than 40,000 projects and concepts that are using decentralized, peer to peer, and commons-centric forms of social life. A lot of this material is not easily available on the open internet. * We reached one billion views a decade ago and the wiki is not just widely used ‘directly’ anymore, but two million chatbots visit us every week:  the p2p/commons perspective is now integrated in the responses of the major AI research chatbots such as ChatGPT and Deepseek (just ask to add the ‘p2p wiki’ perspective to any of your searches). * We bring a vital new perspective on social change, based on the real experiences of millions of people who are effectively changing their ways of life. If you want to know how to organize productive communities, how to relate to non-human life and resources , and how to create a resilient and thriving life in harmony with the planet’s long term existence, this wiki could be of vital assistance. We have been able to maintain this wiki since 2005, spending several hours a day of unpaid work. Since 2018, we have not received any support from NGO’s and philanthropic sources. So now, we need direct support from our users and the public. Last month, we disappeared from the intern et for three full weeks. We are back with the help of Jeff Emmett of the Crypto Commons Alliance. With your financial help, I want to generate a basic income to protect my capacity to continue updating and maintaining the wiki in terms of content; and to compensate Jeff for his hosting and maintenance work. In the immediate future, we aim for $6k to bridge a difficult period. Please assist us with this fundraising. This is an urgent request for assistance. I do not know how many of you know this but in 1938, Carl Jung traveled through India for 3 months. He was deeply fascinated by the sage Ramana Maharshi, arguably the most significant soul facer of the 20th century. Despite being in India & having every opportunity to meet him, Jung studiously avoided visiting the Maharshi. Jung later admitted he was afraid of the meeting. He feared that Maharshi's sheer wholeness would shatter his clinical, psychological standpoint. He wrote that Maharshi was a phenomenon so pure that he represented the whitest spot on a white surface...a reality Jung was not ready to face personally, prefering to stay in his European madhouse of abstractions.
“People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own souls. They will practise Indian yoga and all its exercises, observe a strict regimen of diet, learn theosophy by heart, or mechanically repeat mystic texts from the literature of the whole world—all because they cannot get on with themselves and have not the slightest faith that anything useful could ever come out of their own souls.” --C.G. Jung

The great fool of the 21st century is clearly @kanyewest . Just finished the documentary “In Whose Name” which is brilliant. Toward the end, Ye says: “It's one of two things is gonna happen now. Either they destroy me or I destroy it. It being the label. I'm destroying the labels. The label of crazy, the label of anti-Semite, the label of black, label of white, straight, gay, rich, poor, cool, uncool. I'm destroying the labels, all the fucking labels.” Yes, no one has destroyed the old order like he has, not through theory but embodied action. Hopefully his soul survives the flood.
