Putting on my bane mask to go get a cavity filled. The dentists asks me to take it off, I tell him it would be very painful. He tells me it's a big cavity, I respond, for you.

Imagine how much nicer the world would be if we stopped treating morons as though they're public intellectuals whose opinions matter. This guy is just painfully stupid any time he tries to talk about movies. The purpose of Funny Games is not to be "demoralizing". It's an examination of why we find entertainment value in watching the suffering of others, it's a humanistic deconstruction of how violence is utilized in movies and media. Calling it a horror movie at all is ignorant. Haneke is one of our greatest artists and his work is all about deconstructing the medium, but Walsh is viewing the movie like it's The Stranger or You're Next or some piece of junk like that. Matt Walsh trying to talk about a Haneke movie is like your dog trying to take a quiz on particle physics.
So apply that same total lack of knowledge about movie history and context to Star Wars, and you get the typical prequel hater takes. If you tried to talk to them about what Lucas is doing in the movie, they wouldn't have any idea what you're talking about. If Matt Walsh tried to talk about Stan Brakhage or Arthur Lipsett or Russian silent movies, he'd sound even stupider than when he tries to talk about Haneke. But they're not interested in understanding what Lucas is doing, they're only interested in what they WANT Lucas to be doing. You ask them what's wrong with the prequels, and they say "they're bad". You ask what's bad about them, they say "the acting is bad" or "the writing is bad", but by "bad" what they mean is that it's not what THEY wanted. They can't explain how it actually failed at what Lucas intended for it to be doing, because it does exactly what he meant it to. They can’t define “bad” in any terms except that they don’t like it, so: It’s bad because they don’t like it, and they don’t like it because it’s bad. It’s a circular statement that they make because they aren’t equipped to articulate what they don’t like about it in any meaningful way. By "bad" what they mean is that it isn't what they personally (in their extraordinarily limited taste) enjoy watching. That's not a qualitative evaluation, it's a baby having a tantrum because he didn't get his way.
Which is kind of the whole point I make in my video about the SW prequels btw. Every few years for some reason this debate comes back up, and people keep saying the same stupid shit they’ve been saying for 27 years like it’s new, but it is nice of them to keep proving the point of my video for me
They fail at being epic operas even more than they fail at realism. The writing and acting is mostly flat and boring. Same goes for the cinematography. There’s nothing operatic about it. Epic perhaps in theory but certainly not in execution. You guys have created a version of the Star Wars prequels in your heads (a version that sounds pretty interesting, if only it existed) and have grafted it onto the actual films which in reality fail at whatever they were trying to do, unless they were trying to be verbose, clumsy, wooden, and bland.
It’s very clear to the rest of us that the people trying to rehab the Star Wars prequels are just nostalgic for something that they enjoyed as kids. That’s fine. I have a nostalgic attachment to some crappy 90s movies like Independence Day for example. It came out when I was 10 and at the time it seemed to me like the greatest cinematic achievement in history. But then I grew up and I can now see that Will Smith punching an alien and saying “welcome to earf” is not a high point of western art. And that’s fine. It’s stupid but I still remember it fondly. You don’t have to try so hard to intellectualize some dumb bullshit you liked when you were a kid. It’s okay. It can just be dumb bullshit, which it is.
Clear reason why we lost. He was saving one today and becoming the villain. It’s what he does
Work and gym done. Time to finally crack open the latest GNev pod by GNev sponsored by GNev featuring GNev. With my rod in my hand.
The Ballon D’or becomes much more compelling if we can have winners who aren’t perfect, don’t have to win the CL and WC etc just to have a shot. If we can get rid of the pathetic PR and narrative battles in the build up then I think it’s in a healthier place
