An Open Letter to the (BIE) @bieparis regarding #EXPO2027 in #Belgrade Please Share for better visibility. To the esteemed members of the BIE, As #Belgrade prepares to host EXPO2027, we, concerned citizens and advocates for transparency and safety, urge you to consider the potential risks associated with corruption in Serbia's construction sector. We believe that ensuring the safety and well-being of all visitors and workers at #EXPO2027 must be a paramount concern. We cannot forget the tragic events of 2024 in Novi Sad, where a canopy collapse at the railway station resulted in the deaths of 15 people. Investigations revealed serious shortcomings in construction practices and oversight, raising alarming questions about the safety standards prevalent in the country. With billions of euros allocated for EXPO2027 infrastructure, including a new National Stadium and vast exhibition spaces, the scale of construction is unprecedented. However, concerns have been raised about potential corruption risks, particularly due to expedited approval processes and exemptions from standard public procurement laws. @anticorruption Transparency International (Transparency #Serbia), a respected anti-corruption watchdog, has already highlighted these concerns. The potential for opaque dealings and substandard construction practices poses a direct threat to the safety and security of everyone involved in EXPO2027. Therefore, we implore the BIE to take the following actions: 1. Demand rigorous safety standards: Insist that all construction projects related to #EXPO2027 adhere to the highest international safety regulations, with independent, third-party oversight and inspections throughout the process. 2. Promote transparency: Advocate for open and competitive tendering processes for all construction contracts. Ensure public access to these contracts to minimize the risk of corruption and ensure accountability. 3. Investigate past failures: Encourage a thorough and transparent review of the 2023 Novi Sad canopy collapse to identify systemic issues and ensure that lessons are learned and implemented in all EXPO2027 projects. #EXPO2027 holds tremendous potential for #Serbia and its people. However, this potential must not be realized at the cost of human life or by compromising ethical practices. We urge the BIE to work closely with Serbian authorities to ensure a safe, transparent, and successful event for all. Sincerely
