Migration Alert!! 400 million birds will be migrating tonight—a good time to turn off nonessential outdoor lighting and to treat reflective windows to keep birds safe. Learn more at birdcast.info/science-to-act… #LightsOut #LightsOutAlert

In most of the "double-blind" reviews I've done, I find the authors' names in one place or another, like in the supplementary material or response-to-reviewers letter. Not saying this is done on purpose, but "accidentally" revealing oneself would give some people an advantage.

I am thrilled to present a new method to reconstruct the full migratory trajectory of birds from pressure sensors and wind data! 🦅🐦🌍 Check it out: 🔗 doi.org/10.1111/2041-210X.14… #science #birdmigration #birdwatching #ornithology – at Manhattan, NY

Nice to see this out today, “Naive songbirds show seasonally appropriate spring orientation in the laboratory despite having never completed first migration”. Perhaps worth a read for those interested in #migratory #inheritance and #philopatry in birds! 👀 royalsocietypublishing.org/d…

I'd like to introduce pykanto, a new Python library that could be helpful for researchers who work with large animal vocalization datasets recorded in the field. You can read the preprint here: arxiv.org/pdf/2302.10340v1.p… And here's a thread for more information 👇🧵

Wow! @DrBirdCast projects HALF A BILLION BIRDS will be in the air tonight as they migrate south. Could be great birding for Saturday's #OctoberBigDay! Also great time to turn out nonessential lighting and check windows for bird safety: birdcast.info/science-to-act… #LightsOutTexas

Did you know that over 32 million migrating birds will pass over Illinois tonight? Turn your lights off and let’s help the birds on their way.
~50% of all birds migrating will pass through on only ~9 nights in the season. Tonight will be one of those MEGA migration nights. Please turn off lights to help the birds go along their merry way. Have paper bags ready to contain injured birds, and call us for help! 773-988-1867

Had a conversation with some NSF PIs recently and was reminded that it’s hard for some folks to reach out to NSF Program Officers (POs). I wish I had one weird trick to make it easier but I don’t. Instead, I’ll try to provide a few thoughts that will hopefully help.

Migration is looking massive this weekend, with 316 to 400+ MILLION migrating birds on the wing each night, according to @DrBirdCast. Should be great birding—also a good time to turn off nonessential lights to avoid disorienting birds. bit.ly/LightsOutForBirds #LightsOutTexas
