Jamia Millia Islamia administration has alleged that gates and other campus property were vandalised overnight, though Delhi Police said no complaint had been filed at the time of reporting. Meanwhile, students continue their protest and hunger strikes.

Following our social media appeal, citizens reported 54 non-compliant traffic islands across Greater Mumbai. We submitted a letter to the Municipal Commissioner requesting action, which was forwarded to relevant officials for follow-up. Thank you to all who put in efforts helping us collect images. Why are these islands non-compliant? IRC guidelines state that pedestrian refuge islands should provide a safe, accessible resting point while crossing large intersections and remain free of landscaping and fencing. Additionally, BMC's circular DyChEE/6037/Traffic, dated 18 October 2019, prohibits elements taller than 60 cm on traffic islands, as they can obstruct drivers' visibility. What happened after the follow-up? An official from F/N Ward contacted us regarding one of the 54 reported islands specifically the one at a crucial crossing on Sion Circle, Road 8. (The first image in the post) Developed around 5–6 years ago, the island would be difficult to remove now said the official. The official raised concerns that demolition could trigger a political slugfest, with local councillors potentially re-landscaping the island anyway, resulting in repeated waste of public money. If BMC cannot rectify an issue of its own making, what does Pedestrian First even mean? This is among the least controversial interventions to implement city-wide, with no repercussions for street vendors or private stakeholders, yet it remains difficult to fix. Pedestrian First cannot simply mean evicting hawkers and calling it a day. Systemic changes within BMC are needed to prevent dangerous obstructions from being installed on public land using public money. What should we do? We need more citizens to coordinate with local councillors and ward offices, build awareness among residents and other stakeholders, and secure a firm commitment that corrected islands will not be reconstructed in the same non-compliant form. If you are willing to engage with your local councillor and ward office, please reach out. A small team cannot drive this change across Mumbai alone. Citizens must step up in their own neighbourhoods. Contact us at [email protected]

Bizarre incident. Citizens cleaned Ane Park near Bengaluru on their own by crowd funding. When they came next day they saw poster of BJP MLA Ashwath Narayana taking credit for it. This made them furious and they are calling this out.

The government of India, through Ministry of Road Transport and highways is a data broker selling our personal data. Shameful. No wonder govt wanted to exempt itself from dpdp act.
Your number plate can reveal your full name, address and insurance details to anyone with ₹29 and an app. Our RTIs found that NIC issued 25,000+ private credentials to query VAHAN and eChallan since January 2024, leading to 17 million private lookups. On October 1, private data sharing was quietly switched off with no public notice. Meanwhile, the logs that could prove misuse are set to expire. We’ve filed first appeals demanding accountability and preservation of those logs. Found your details on a third-party vehicle app? On the viability of Media Business in India and its political economy: I study the business operations of media orgs for a while as a side entertainment. It's instructive. There is a churn in the industry and there is a business model challenge because tech advancement has altered the capital required to start a tiny operation. A million new 'media and content' businesses have proliferated and moth-eaten into the growth of big media revenues. But, The story of large Indian media businesses can never be visible from reading topline profits and revenues from the balance sheets of the mothership entities. The way money is milked-out by promoters, owners and top editors, directly and through other adjacent cost booking hide the actual financial health of the main media production company. The owners and editors are not yet willing in most organisations to end their gravy trains and influence peddling. Neither are they keen to do more or better journalism. Having reconciled that they cannot do any more journalism than they do at the moment, they have instead decided to move into the volume 'content' generation market. When they complain about journalism not working out as a business, it's usually the case that they are in the business of 'minimal journalism' and maxing content generation to cover for that. And, that model is competing with a million new nimble-footed, miniscule or near-zero capital infused, content generators. The traditional ad-revenue streams of these minimal journalism media businesses (from private companies and political parties in power) are flattening. Corporates and political parties (in and out of power) are incrementally putting money behind 'content generator influencers'. The media orgs aren't getting share of this growing pie that they think they deserve by right. The only way these minimal-journalism max-media business orgs would do better for their journalist employees was if they did more journalism. But, they know, that they cannot afford to do that and live the kind of 'media mogul' lives they have lived for long. So, they keep doing more 'content' and milking their motherships while claiming journalism doesn't pay in India. It would, if they invested in journalism.

Bengaluru has lost more than 43 lakh names from its electoral roll in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), with its electorate shrinking from 1.03 crore to just 59.08 lakh. The city, which accounted for the highest number of deletions in Karnataka during the draft stage, was also disproportionately affected during the subsequent notice and hearing process, with nearly half of all notices issued across the State concentrated here. thehindu.com/news/cities/ban…

The public parking facility near Kohinoor in Dadar, under the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), is currently closed. The ground floor has been allotted to a private organisation, while the other three basement levels remain unused. If the BMC invites tenders and reopens the parking facility, it would help accommodate vehicles and reduce roadside parking in Dadar. @mybmcWardGN @mybmc @MTPHereToHelp @Mumbaikhabar9

This kind of press report by @DainikBhaskar would not be possible under the current DPDP Act. Press organisations are placed in the incredible position of having to secure consent from the “Data Principal” before processing their personal data. The lack of an exception for journalistic reporting, news gathering is unconstitutional and an effort to denude press freedom. The Press does more than report on corruption incidentally, its past exposes have resulted in massive social change, uncovered social evils and other ills gripping society. The Law must either be amended to bring in press reporting and its ancillary tasks including investigation and fact gathering as an exception to the DPDP obligations.
