Thread: Pumped storage seems to be all the rage for "firming" renewables. This ran through my head last night and I got thinking, what's the scale required? /1

Nice wind lull going on. If you follow the white Ontario demand line, we never stop running gas, so we are charging batteries with gas and then discharging that gas-generated energy during the peaks. The emissions savings of gas-powered batteries? 🤷🏻‍♂️ 😂

This delights me so very much. People using AI to take back control of devices that they bought, but were covertly designed to spy on them and harvest their data. I'm usually reluctant to brandish my fame, but I'm gonna do it for this worthy cause. OG hacker says you're doing good! This kind of liberation is what it's all about.

I love @OurWorldInData but when they whiff, they really whiff. A collection of SEVEN quite wildly different energy sources are "beating" solo nuclear energy? No shit.
The world is getting more of its electricity from renewables but less from nuclear power. If the world is to reduce its carbon emissions and tackle climate change, it needs to move away from fossil fuels to low-carbon power. There are two key sources of low-carbon electricity: renewables — which include solar, wind, hydropower and others — and nuclear power. While rapid growth in solar and wind has increased the amount of electricity coming from renewables, a lack of enthusiasm for nuclear means it’s playing a shrinking role in the global mix. In the chart, you can see the share of global electricity coming from fossil fuels, renewables, and nuclear since 1985. Since 2000, nuclear and renewables have followed very different trajectories. Back then, both accounted for a similar share of global electricity. But in 2025, renewables made up more than three times as much: 34% compared to 9%. The total amount of electricity produced by nuclear plants is about the same as it was two decades ago. But because the world produces much more electricity overall, its share of the electricity mix has declined. (written by @_HannahRitchie and @parriagadap)

It’s #NuclearScienceWeek, and we’re celebrating Canadian nuclear innovation! 🍁 Developed right here in Canada, CANDU technology is supported by Canadian suppliers and experts and uses natural uranium, a fuel Canada produces domestically. It’s a homegrown success story that continues to support long-term energy security. #NuclearSciWeek #NuclearEnergy #CANDU

Good news #1: The OEB and its expert consultants snuck out new regulated price plan rates late Friday afternoon. 1st impression is this performative act avoided the idiocy of recent years ON costs will still go up a little as the OER subsidy will drop to counteract the new rates

On Tuesday, October 13th, 2026, @CanadiansEnergy and the Canadian nuclear community suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of my dear friend of 25 years @jules_besseling. Jules played a critical role in the development of our CNSC license extension submission for @opg Pickering, with his decades of expertise in pressure tube design and aging informing the main points of the article. Jules was an active member on the @BWXT Community Liaison Committee here in Peterborough, his presence and vitality will be sorely missed. facebook.com/lisa.besseling/…

As Pickering Nuclear prepares for its refurbishment, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the station’s remarkable legacy. For decades, the station's people have powered Ontario, helped achieve major milestones, all while producing countless megawatts of reliable, clean electricity. From the original “A” side, home to Units 1–4, to the newer “B” side, which houses Units 5–8 and is scheduled to begin refurbishment next year, pending regulatory approval, Pickering has been a powerhouse in every sense of the word. Take a quick look back at the decades of memories, achievements, and people that helped make Pickering one of the world’s best-performing nuclear stations and learn more: bit.ly/4yjtmwj
