1/9: Pulled 3.1M MLB pitches, 2021-2026, to test something: if every pitcher can now see what a good slider looks like, what happens once everybody builds one? Thread on what six seasons say.

There are legit, mostly aesthetic arguments (albeit ones I disagree with) against analytics, but ~80% of anti-analytics arguments boil down to "analytics is anything I don't like" and it is so funny to see people tie themselves in knots because it's these two teams in the WS
This post is full of crap and lies from start to finish; at least they should try to get their numbers right: they had 16 whiffs, and that "only" happened in half of all games during the 2026 season...
And btw, 13 whiffs happened 1151 times, so there's no statistical anomaly.
How is this possible?
During last night's World Series Game 3 on October 26, 2026, the Milwaukee Brewers saw 175 pitches and only swung and missed 13 times.
The odds of this occurring in a modern Major League Baseball game are incredibly slim, reflecting an elite contact rate of roughly 92.6% on swings. In today's high-velocity, high-spin environment, a typical MLB team averages a whiff rate of about 24% to 26% per game.
Holding a Major League pitching staff to just 13 total swinging strikes over 175 pitches is a statistical anomaly, demonstrating a hyper-disciplined approach at the plate that propelled them to a dominant 10-1 victory over the Rays.

It was 16 whiffs, actually, and a team whiffed at 16 pitches or less in 2,232 games over the course of this season and the playoffs. baseballsavant.mlb.com/statc…

Abro hilo:
1/8
It ships as `base_detector` and loads in one line:
from baseballcv.functions import LoadTools
LoadTools().load_model("base_detector")
The `BaseDetector` class wraps it with sensible confidence and aspect-ratio filtering, and runs comfortably, albeit slow, on CPU.
Evan Arey, currently in high school (contact data in the repo), did the dataset annotation and the first training run.
He did an amazing job, and I'm sure you will hear and read a lot about him!
Everything is open:
• model: `base_detector` via LoadTools
• dataset: `base_detect_dataset` + curated labels in the repo
• retraining notebook: run the full loop on Colab
• details: github.com/BaseballCV/Baseba…
New in BaseballCV: base detection for broadcast feeds.
One model, two classes: find every base on the field (except home), from the wide shot to the tag play at the bag.
A short thread on what it is and how it was built:

A reminder about Tampa's offense as we get this series started and the broadcast starts laying it on thick with the clichés:

This consumed me for 10 years. Online abuse is not okay.
It has made me doubt myself and my abilities for long enough, it was time I spoke out and let it go!
