Watching our colleague (and “I’m a hyrox athlete training for the world championships”), @Mark_MatthewsNZ, being super competitive in the lab while trialling Danu Socks.
Thanks for the demo Mia & Oisin 👏

Thanks Martin & Patrik for the great @QualisysMocap @QualisysUK workshop helping optimise our system and demonstrating their markerless system 👏
Appreciate the validation too! 😉 #OneOfTheBestBiomechanicsLabs

Ciara Mageean died this morning. A light has gone out in the world. Authentic, talented, decent. Her kindness and wonderful personality was a joy to watch and see. Then came her iconic sporting achievements.
When we sat down with Ciara for the GAA Social in July, she received disappointing news the day before. Ciara didn’t want to cancel, so we recorded on the Tuesday. It’s 90 minutes Oisin & myself will always treasure. She was the best of us.
To Thomas, I’m so sorry. She was mad about you. To the Mageean family, all her great friends and the Portaferry community- what a stunning human being, to call one of your own. This is so unfair.
I’ve never met a person who met Ciara, who didn’t love her. A one off.
🏊 ‘Hip-driven’. ‘Shoulder-driven’.
Familiar coaching cues used in swimming. But what’s happening beneath those labels?
My new research reveals how shoulder–hip coordination changes between sprint & 400 m pace; and why WHEN you rotate deserves attention. 👇
The standout finding?
Recovery phase - that’s where the coordination differences were concentrated.
No pace-related difference was detected during the push phase.
Calling a stroke ‘hip-driven’ or ‘shoulder-driven’ can hide what happens throughout the entire stroke cycle.
Coach the swimmer, not the average.
The practical question: how do THIS swimmer’s shoulders & hips coordinate at race pace?
Before cueing “drive from the hips”, be clear about which movement you want to change - and when.

Congrats @brianna_mulhern on her first-author publication!👏
Shedding new light on head acceleration exposure during scrums & mauls in rugby🏉
Particularly valuable is the inclusion of women’s rugby, helping address an important evidence gap & informing future player welfare.
🚨NEW PUBLICATION🚨
Congrats PhD Researcher @brianna_mulhern, Dr @carlamccabe @UUEngineering colleagues & collaborators on their latest publication examining head acceleration events during scrums & mauls in elite men’s & women’s rugby

Much research on talent starts with already-selected elite juniors.
We studied the full youth distribution: 8,965 Swedish swimmers.
All 41 senior elites at 22–25 had been top 10% in at least one event at 13–15.

🏊♂️🥇Excited to share this study, which used an embedded sensor to analyze Logan Fontaine's races over a two-year period, leading up to his 2024 World Championship title in the 5 km open water event

Thanks @KateNicholl for championing this much-needed cause.
Northern Ireland needs a Swimming Strategy.
🏊♂️ Every child deserves the opportunity to learn to swim, and everyone should have access to satisfactory swimming facilities- no matter where you live in NI.

Great article from @harpur_jamie on the need for a swimming pool in Carryduff (& he kindly mentions the work I’m doing to ensure all children leave primary school able to swim 25m) belfastlive.co.uk/news/news-…
Every child deserves the opportunity to learn this lifesaving skill.
We need robust data to inform policy, target investment & tackle inequalities in access.
Thanks @KateNicholl for championing this important agenda and helping put NI on par with the rest of the UK 🏊👏
We’re on a mission to ensure every child leaves primary school able to swim 25m! Great to talk to @carlamccabe today about best practice, data, infrastructure, skills… but mostly how learning to swim cannot be a class issue. Lots of work to do to get moved up political agenda
