I just finished reading Viola Davis’ memoir and she talks about this in depth and especially for her who wasn’t considered “conventionally attractive” to get lead roles or get roles at all. You can imagine the level of resilience it took. She said she realised that she was being used as a door opener for other black women and she needed to heal herself in order to do that.
That book means everything to me
