If Eisenkot and co show enough courage to cobble together a coalition with Arab-led parties, they'll be able to adopt a new social contract for Israel and integrate 20 percent of their citizenry in unprecedented ways.
The new government will have new levels of good-faith in the region and able to expand a circle of peace with Arab neighbors. Arab members of the government can become emissaries to Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries.
It will also be a PR coup for Israel and improves its image abroad.

"Eisenkot needs to show the same cold-blooded determination that Netanyahu would, were he in the same position: To form a feasible coalition, to force compromises... to constantly keep his eye on the prize."

If Gadi Eisenkot and the opposition bloc are remotely serious about getting rid of Netanyahu, and about Israel’s democratic future, they’ll do the obvious, strategic, and non-racist thing of forming a government with the Arab parties.
A Jewish-Arab political partnership is necessary to meet this political moment, and for any shared future.

I have in the past asserted that the fate of Israeli democracy depends on the Palestinian citizens of Israel.
That framing is totally incorrect.
The fate of Israeli democracy - and by extension, the fate of Israel - depends on the ability of Israeli society to engage the Palestinian citizens of Israel as equals.
The onus is on us, and not on them. The future demands that politically, this is no longer "us" and "them", but rather an inclusive "we the people".

If Israel's current exit polls hold, the parties representing the Jewish center will have to make a choice: partner with Arab parties or else keep Bibi in power.
A pretty clear metaphor for the choice facing Israel more broadly.
Charles Wang retweeted
If these exit poll results hold up, the big question will be whether the Eisenkot-led 'change bloc' is truly committed to change because it will have to rely on the parliamentary support of Arab-majority parties to govern. If it isn't willing to do that, then Netanyahu will remain caretaker prime minister until another election takes place.

The Israeli election is today! The situation is complicated and it could be decided by weird, idiosyncratic factors, such as which small parties get to the 3.25% threshold for representation and which don't. Here's a nonexhaustive list of the reasons why I want the opposition bloc to win:
1. The opposition will stop the Bibi Netanyahu bloc's "judicial reform," which threatens to destroy judicial review in Israel. Israel has no federalism or separation of powers, and judicial review is the main obstacle to a dangerous "tyranny of the majority."
2. An opposition government would stop the depredations of settlers using violence to force West Bank Palestinians off their land. This is a grave injustice, and terrible for Israel's image in the West. Bibi mostly turns a blind eye to this, because his coalition depends on the support of far-right nationalist parties that back the violent settlers.
3. Bibi bears a huge share of responsibility for Israel getting surprised on October 7. There is now extensive evidence he ignored warnings from a variety of sources. He refuses to take any responsibility or hold an independent investigation (as Israel did after comparable military failures in 1973 and 1982). He needs to be held accountable for his horrific failure, and there needs to be an investigation to help ensure this doesn't happen again.
4. The scenarios are complicated. But one very possible one is an opposition coalition with the Arab Raam party (which has tried hard to make itself a potentially acceptable coalition party for the Jewish parties). Better integrating the Arab population is an important objective.
5. Bibi's coalition includes horrible authoritarian racists like Smotrich and Ben Gvir. These people are a grave menace, and must be removed from government.
To be clear:
1. An opposition government would still have many policies I think are very bad. That's true of virtually every government in the world. From a libertarian perspective, pretty much all elections are a matter of identifying lesser evils.
2. Even under the Bibi coalition, Israel is far better than adversaries like Hamas and Hezbollah. But a liberal democracy should aspire to more than being "better than Hamas."

it's easy to gloss over how rare it is, but it's beautiful to see millions of jews and arabs freely flooding the ballot box alike in a region where theocracy and despotism is the order of the day. israel is deeply flawed, but it's the only real democracy in the middle east

It’s kinda crazy to me that we melt sand down, clean it to 99.99999% purity, literal wizards have to draw it slowly into an ingot, we cut it, inscribe a hundred billion little on/off switches on it, and when you run electric current through it you can do basic arithmetic, which when you do enough of it can do any math on the planet, and which describes reality well enough that we can teach it the ontological meaning of words and their distance from each other on a high-dimensional space, and if you ask, it can tell you what word comes next and that apparently is powerful enough that if you do it a hundred billion times it’s the smartest thing to ever exist

Nithya Raman really is running to be the Zohran Mamdani of L.A.
Someone who is pretty far left, but also technocratic, results-focused, and intent on dismantling the city's machine politics. And also aggressively pro-housing.
If she wins, I wonder what other big cities could see candidates with this brand of politics pop up.
