Ukraine Raises Alarm As Trump Emerges From Meeting Wearing Soviet Ushanka buff.ly/NPtdsGA

I am preparing updated slides for a public talk about the war in Ukraine and made this infographic to illustrate the costly Russian conquests, and how much worse they have been faring over time. This explains a lot about why Putin needs Trump to ride to his rescue so badly and why the US government has renewed the push for Ukraine to cede the remainder of Donetsk without a fight. The Russians are simply incapable of conquering it without a massive new mobilization (which even in the threatening environment there the polls show 73% oppose).

Oh my, another idiot take that just won’t die. The Europeans are not funding Russia’s war. They started from a deep structural dependency on Russian energy and have made tremendous — and fast — progress on decoupling. This isn’t something you just turn off overnight. And they still contribute far more to Ukraine in aid anyway.
In contrast, the US is not even remotely dependent on Russian fossil fuels and yet the Kremlin asset in the White House is easing sanctions anyway while completely shutting off aid.
Contrary to the braindead takes of Trump apologists, the hypocrisy runs squarely through Washington, not Brussels.
In case you were wondering who was funding Russia's war on Ukraine, the EU is the number 1 purchaser of Russia's liquid natural gas and pipeline gas products through September 2026.energyandcleanair.org/august…

By all means decry the harm this war is doing to Russians (along with the much greater harm to Ukrainians). But remember that Putin’s regime is responsible for all of it.

Do not count on a democratic Russia after Putin; that is ruled out for about 20 years.
The goal should be a Russia that is not aggressive toward its neighbors, and Europe can help. What Russia certainly needs is decentralized power: more parliamentarism, more federalism.
Throwback, and still a valid question.

I'm happy to avoid Brazilian politics, but Lula's bizarre remarks about Zelensky being "as responsible for the war as Putin" must be revisited now. Does he stand by them after months of Russian war crimes? Does he defend a war of imperial conquest?

I’ll take a shot at answering one of these good questions. These poor young people are not dying for "no reason". They’re dying because Vladimir Putin's Russia invaded Ukraine and Ukrainians don’t want to be murdered. I hope this helps.

Yaroslav Trofimov (@yarotrof) is the chief foreign-affairs correspondent of the Wall Street Journal. He was born in Kyiv in 1969. About the Ukraine war, readers have learned a great deal from him. In a podcast, I have put some key questions to him.

Regarding Russian conscripts, this is not the case. The overwhelming percentage of Russian forces fighting in this war are men well over 30 who accepted service contracts for money. They were not conscripted, or mobilized. For more on this topic: warontherocks.com/a-return-t…

The endless slaughter of Ukrainian and Russians must stop.
We should some sympathy for the poor Russian conscripts too. Those kids have no choice but to fight and die in drone strikes.

The good news about Lula winning Brazilian election is that when he blames Ukraine & tells them to give us their land, at least it will be anti-imperialist.
Unlike when a fascist says the same thing.
