This issue of Outlookindia stands against the dangerous silencing of voices. Poetry must be brought before the general public. In a world of controlled speech and linear narratives, poetry offers the scope that we get affected, that we feel. @Outlookindia #journalism

Bringing you a significant personal update: I have resigned as Editor of The New Indian Express. Nearly five years on the job. Quite a journey, it was! Taking a ‘south’ paper right into battle with the big boys in the mainstream. Lots to celebrate, analyse and reflect over. But first of all, thank you to everyone who followed my work during this passage. Performance is often lonely work, and one thinks of the collective out there—a reading, thinking public. Then it always makes sense. It’s gratifying that good, old-fashioned journalism still works excellently if you produce clean, credible work. It turns out that all sides can trust it. That may sound like a general axiomatic truth, but I have had the tough privilege of testing it in highly fraught and polarised times. Not an easy job, I can assure you. How do I measure that trust? Well, I look at the sheer number of story leads and ideas that the TNIE put out and everyone else followed — from startups to big players. There’s even a Netflix docu out there! Becoming a kind of primary source for every part of the media was silent endorsement. Buy me good coffee, and I may tell you some stories :)) I have reason to think this was an outcome of a specific strategy, of playing with the notion of ‘centre’ and ‘periphery’ in our news universe. It was a gigantic operation, with an editorial team that ran into the hundreds. Managing that as a woman editor, perhaps the first in India to rise from beat journalism to the editorship of a legacy organisation, was a rare privilege. And full of lessons. Closing that chapter is a full-time job right now. The next one, right now, is some R&R! #Media #Journalism #NewsMedia #IndianMedia

Devastating news. Catapult imprint Soft Skull is due to publish my novel is a months time & everyone who worked there & interacted with me threw themselves into the book--it was an indie in the true sense of the word. They loved edginess, they went out of their way to help
The independent publisher Catapult, cofounded in 2015 by Elizabeth Koch, will be acquired by an unspecified buyer and end operations on October 30. The newly formed staff union said it was notified that “continued employment with the prospective buyer is not an option.” buff.ly/f4EapkJ

Alarm about declining interest in books is perpetual, but to some, it seems recently to have reached new heights. It has been less than a year since the Reader’s Digest declared a “reading slump.” A summer Atlantic cover pronounced: “The Age of Reading Is Over.” In America, though, reading is up. Book sales have increased significantly over the past decade, and the number of new independent bookstores has skyrocketed. The global book market is expected to grow five per cent annually for the next several years. For the generation now entering college, book sales are at a lifetime high. James Daunt believes in the future of reading. He likes to think of his work—founding the independent U.K. Daunt Books chain, leading the behemoth Waterstones, and, in 2019, becoming the C.E.O. of Barnes & Noble—as the preservation of a kind of literary and civil space. “The more bookshops there are, the more people will read. The better bookshops are, the more people discover things,” he tells Nathan Heller. Read more about why Daunt remains optimistic: newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

At least 16 journalists were brutally detained while covering public demonstrations in #India. In addition to the four journalists already mentioned, RSF has learned that Anushka Bhardwaj (#BusinessStandard), Hritik Joshi and Rahul Charas (@NavbharatTimes), Shoaib Daniyal (#Scroll), Anshu (@newslaundry ), Saurabh Sharma (@Reuters ), Jagriti Trisha (BOOM), Shivang Shukla (Mo), Neeraj Jha (@moliticsindia), and freelance journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta were also forcibly detained in #Delhi, along with Kinjal (@AltNews) in #Ahmedabad and Divya Aslesha (Scroll) in #Pune. Covering events of public interest is not a crime. It is their job. The police's actions against the press are unacceptable.

Receiving disturbing reports of an incident from Maidangarhi PS area that I am hoping @DelhiPolice will clarify. This is what I heard : “Advocate Fidel Tom, practising in Delhi. went to the Sanjay Colony Police Post, Maidan Garhi, after receiving information that some protesters had been detained there. On reaching the police station, he enquired about the detainees and about reports that they were being beaten by the police. A man in plain clothes then approached him and said that he was a police officer. When he asked why he was not in uniform, he became agitated and forcibly took Adv Fidel to the washroom, where he and several others beat him up brutally.” When contacted by a reporter from @thewire_in about these reports, the SHO only said “I will find out and tell you”. Concerned ACP and DCP are cutting their calls. Violence against anybody in custody or on police premises is unacceptable. That a lawyer also seems to have fallen foul of this disregard for the law and constitution is especially alarming.

Anne Carson. “You could whisper down a well. You could write a letter and keep it in a drawer. You could inscribe a curse on a ribbon of lead and bury it in the ground to lie unread for thousands of years. The point is not to find a reader, the point is the telling itself.”

Mumbai: the Thackerays take back the streets.

The many faces of protest. In Delhi and Haryana, leaders from Rahul Gandhi to Neha Bora to Yogendra Yadav, Deep Hooda, Brinda Karat and Derek O'Brien (at a previous protest against the ECI) face the police, water cannons, detentions and more. In Mumbai, the @Cockroachisback team celebrates a successful rally. The CJP has brought energy and freshness to politics, brought much of the youth together. But it is absolutely legitimate to ask questions about the visible difference in the way that this new outfit with unclear end-goals has been treated by the authorities/ the police, or to ask them about cross-solidarity. They might want to respond with some thought rather than defensiveness, especially when many of the people asking have taken an active part in questioning this regime, and in street protests.

There is the original and then, there are imitations. A form of flattery at best. You can substitute but you can never replace. Creating disruption with literature and poetry in magazine journalism requires more conviction than just copying the format.
