Quincy was, yes, one of the greatest and most influential composers and producers of... well ever. But he was also a living cultural repository. The stories this man carried within him. The things he'd seen. I truly do not think there is ANYONE left who was in *all* the same rooms, or witnessed *all* the same moments, as he did. Not even close.

One thing I didn’t expect to learn as an adult is that showing up everyday on time with a good attitude and doing your best will set you apart from 90% of people.

Lefties: "Everything is awful!" Righties: "Everything is awful!" Moderates: "Society has problems, but stuff is better than it was and we're working on making it better yet."

Remember when mongodb came out and everyone got so hyped and started using it just to end up switching back to sql? Remember when microservices got hyped but now the industry recommends use a monolith first? Remember when graphql came out and everyone started hyping it up until they ran into tons of short comings? Give new tech 5 years and reevaluate. Adopt that mindset and become a senior engineer.

They convince your boss you shouldn’t be keeping stuff in Excel They make you plug your Excel data into a slow, awkward browser interface They give you back reports in Excel

Yes, I do think men should be feminists, ie. support the equal rights, opportunities of, and respect for, women. We can do that AND pay proper attention to the needs & challenges of many boys and men. It is not zero sum!
I wouldn't recommend Richard Reeves because he still thinks men should be feminists. The guys at the Center for Male psychology is much better especially John Barry. centreformalepsychology.com/…

A big misconception is that you need to be motivated to get rolling. You don't. Research shows motivation often FOLLOWS action, not the other way around. In practice: you don't need to feel good to get going; you need to get going to give yourself a chance at feeling good.

If the media covered climate change the way it covers Trump, and Trump the way it covers climate change, we'd have neither.

There are only 3 phases of life where NYC beats generic suburbia: - early/mid 20s either entering a high-powered career or with high-powered parental subsidies - married, pre-kids with 2X professional income - wealthy empty nester

A lot of people get seduced by the idea that everything is a conspiracy. A more useful razor, I've found, is to start with the assumption that most everything is bullshit.

The character of the people developing AI and making policy decisions matters enormously for our future. Yet the media rarely covers that. For example, I have repeatedly documented ways in which LeCun is intellectually dishonest, and the choices he make clearly influence the world. Why is this never discussed?

Every so often I think about this photo. It's hard to express the feeling it invokes in me, a longing for a world I knew that I'll probably never see again.

Robert Caro’s legendary “Power Broker” is legendary for so many reasons, not least of all its size (nearly 1,200 pages). But the book is really a collection of magnificent sentences, including this paragraph-long description of NYC Mayor La Guardia:

the best relationship advice I ever received was just that mostly what makes for a great couple is you both enjoy doing absolutely nothing together
