Happy to share my recent publication: academic.oup.com/nar/advance… Detailing many years of work with a very interesting but challenging protein. Thank you to all of my co-authors for their assistance getting this work published. @NAR_Open

Out in @biomaterials now! Ag byproducts (rapeseed proteins leftover from canola oil production) can replace albumin in serum-free media for cultured meat, without much fuss. This link authors.elsevier.com/c/1goB8… gives 50 days free access. Enjoy! & thanks again to the whole team🤗🙌

This work will help to facilitate cost reductions in serum free media. More importantly, it empowers end-users to produce these protein in-house using simple methods so they can explore these diverse and interesting protein families for their own applications.

Better, Beefier, Beefy-R! New preprint in which simple protein isolates from rapeseed meal (a byproduct of canola oil production) appear to fully replace (and improve upon) recombinant albumin in serum-free Beefy-9 medium. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…. Some key points here:

Wonderful to see support for @NewHarvestOrg from a great Canadian Cell Ag company. Kudos, and thank you, to @futurefieldsHQ
Putting our money where our mouths are. Support one of the most important organizations out there (@NewHarvestOrg ) by purchasing some of the best growth factors out there :)

Our preprint is out! Its main goal was to show that it may be possible to aggregate individual fat cells to form whole tissues in food applications. This avoids having to directly grow large/whole tissues, which is more difficult (i.e., costly). 🧵1/3 tinyurl.com/mrxb37ds

Back from an amazing #NewHarvest2022 conference. So great meeting many friends in person for the first time. Two days of wonderful talks, discussions, and engagement with the Cell Ag community. Much work remains and the field needs @NewHarvestOrg more than ever!

Well done Shane!

A long time from pre-print to print-print but here it is! Beefy-9, an easy to make fully serum/animal component-free medium for sustain expansion of bovine satellite cells. Lots more work to do, but hopefully a useful tool/start! 🔬🍔 #cellag #culturedmeat doi.org/10.1038/s42003-022-0…

Honored to have our story of slowly but surely building a cell ag ecosystem featured in @daniellegroen latest on cultured meat for @cdnbiz. It's long one but so, so worth it for anyone interested in understanding the current landscape. bit.ly/3OZqGPc

Our work using microbes to produce growth factors that can be used in SF media applications is now available on bioRxiv - biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… Learn how to produce these in-house for a fraction of the cost.

Growing meat, milk, and eggs from *cells* isn't just a new kind of "alternative protein" It's our once in a lifetime, second chance at agriculture - but kinder, safer, and more just (if we want it) Here's my vision for a world with cellular agriculture: ted.com/talks/isha_datar_how…

Critical that this work continues!!
For the last year, we've been working on a project to identify safety gaps in current methods of producing cell-cultured meat and seafood. Our work (co-authored with folks from @vireo_advisors, @mosa_meat, and @IFF is finally published bit.ly/3lwIm87
