This, I think, is what the @Telegraph, @History_Reclaim, and @RestoreTrustNT have got so wrong since Black Lives Matter: Teaching about the drastically divergent, racialised experiences of colonialism and the multiple identities that have come to constitute today's Britishness as a result of it, is a means of understanding the past more honestly. But it is also the vehicle enabling us to move on from it. If we want to instrumentalise history for social cohesion, as these organisations clearly do, denying that the British Empire was ever racially divisive, or dismissing the importance of those divisions is counterproductive. It only generates more tension, through the refusal to recognise most Black Britons' heritage. We need to start teaching colonial history not as something ‘we’ did to ‘them’, but as something ‘we’ did to 'one another': something from which we might learn.
