Where will you send your $1700? If you make >$40K, come January you have a choice to make. You can send $1700 of your federal taxes to: a) the IRS as you normally do, or a) an org that pays tuition to private schools or b) an org that pays for supports for public school kids

Milwaukee, we’ve got important business to take care of tomorrow! With the Bucks tipping off 3PM and the Brewers in the World Series, I figured you might need a helping hand getting out of work or school early. Consider this your official (unofficial) excuse from the Mayor!

Philadelphia is closing 17 schools and investing $3B in the ones it keeps. More districts will face that balancing act as enrollment declines. Our new analysis on how state facilities funding can catch up 👇

MPS Superintendent Cassellius says Milwaukee Public Schools spends $25,000,000 this year adding extra staff to underenrolled schools. (The other options are closing buildings or cutting student education. MPS will decide in the next 6 weeks how many buildings they will close.)
Replying to @GhaleonQ
Superintendent Cassellius says Milwaukee Public Schools spends $25,000,000 superstaffing underused schools. "This year alone, we stood up $25,000,000 at schools that were underutilized. We gave them more staff than what they would be allocated based on our standard of care."

"As DC’s example suggests, the most realistic way to desegregate our schools today might actually be to focus on improving their results first." Really good stuff here from @JHWeissmann. vox.com/policy/505269/washin…

Nikole Hannah Jones and others have long argued that in order to fix schools, we need to start by integrating them. For Vox I wrote about how DC shows the opposite may be true: Fixing your schools can help integrate them. vox.com/policy/505269/washin…

Two numbers from Mike Miles’s testimony today that say a lot about what’s happening in #HISD: 7️⃣0️⃣% — Principals’ time expected to be spent coaching teachers. 9️⃣5️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ — Teachers who can tell you the district’s expectation for high-quality instruction. That’s what system coherence looks like.

People should realize the underlying NEA/AFT opposition to the federal scholarship tax credit isn’t just about being able to regulate or exclude competition. It’s about being able to regulate aspects of the economy they currently don’t control.

Charitable contributions are not public funds. They are private funds. If all charitable giving is suddenly public funds we have a real problem.

So many people criticized Nikole Hannah-Jones for choosing a "bad" school. I wonder how many middle-class parents believe they chose a "good" that is actually mediocre. citizen.substack.com/p/the-m…

Nikole Hannah-Jones recently published an essay in the New York Times reflecting on her decision to send her daughter to a high-poverty, segregated public school. On a recent episode of Reasonably Optimistic, Megan McArdle (@asymmetricinfo) asked Harvard professor Roland Fryer for his reaction to the article. Here is what he had to say. 🔗 Watch the full conversation here: wapo.st/4yiTGaR

It is simultaneously true that in most cities the low-income schools have higher per student spending and *also* that the schools in richer neighborhoods have better staffing and a wider range of classes and extracurriculars.

I have many thoughts on the Nikole Hannah-Jones story, especially having attended the kind of schools she sent her daughter to, but if we're looking for takeaways, here's a simple one. When an expert in education so thoroughly demonstrates a jarring and near complete lack of expertise in the act of getting an education for her own daughter, we should stop taking advice from her on curriculum, instruction, and all other fads disguised as wisdom she offers. That seems like the least we could do. Her daughter's personal struggle, which is indeed sympathetic, wasn't much of a teachable moment for her, as she doesn't seem to have updated any of her priors (and actually fudges funding facts, so as not to disrupt the narrative of under-resourced schools). But it should be a teachable moment for us, about the outsized influence of a scholar who claims to know better than anyone what her daughter would be up against in the school to which she chose to send her, but was inexplicably surprised and left her daughter completely unprepared for it.

NHJ sets up a difficult choice between low-performing majority Black schools and high-performing majority White schools by pretending NYC’s high-performing charter sector doesn’t exist (the word “charter” never appears in the article)
Imagine how pissed off Nikole Hannah-Jones's daughter will be when she learns that there are majority black public schools in New York City where they assign homework, don't tolerate chaos, and where the kids all pass the state exams! @MoskowitzEva
