“How do you rotate your goalies?” “They change on the fly” Here’s why, They are ready and engaged, no checking out or getting bored, and it’s fun. “What if you get scored on?” It’s 10u…we’ll be ok.

As a ref I see a ton of chaotic time outs, trying to get lots of info in a short time or changing up a system to hold/gain a lead in the final minutes. Creating these situations in practice will help calm those chaotic last few minutes or when adversity strikes.

Puck below the goal line, get lost. Puck goes high, get to the net.
Love when people try and turn ice hockey into a science 🧪 project. Sid still goes to the net like he's 20. All you gotta know.

If the pucks behind the net I’m not an option standing on top of the crease. Even though players will force it to the middle over and over. Become a hawk, hunting and exploding into space to get a shot or cut off the breakout.
Pet peeve- F2-3 standing stationary at the top of the crease with the puck below the goal line. Doing the D’s job for him or taking a beating for no reason. Shots coming…then get to the net. IMO should be a Hawk circling and hunting open space, ready to cut off breakout.

“Bring at the net front tied up when the puck is behind the net is worthless” A 3 sec “house” rule like the lane in basketball is a good addition to sag’s. Helps them work on timing and drawing D away.
Rutger McGroarty with an insightful take on the “get to the net” cliché and why timing matters more than simply going to the net: “I think overall, a lot of people just say, like, ‘Get to the net, get to the net, get to the net.’ But just going to the net, a lot of the time, is just kind of a dumb play, and that's what a lot of people don't realize. If you just go there and get tied up, I think arriving on time is a huge thing. I think that not being at the net front in a battle when the puck's behind the net, because that's worthless. I think that just arriving on time is a huge thing, and that's something that I've tried to work on a lot.” #LetsGoPens

Engagement/perception off the puck Awareness with it-right play, right time One of the biggest differences as levels increase and one of the least practiced.

When you have kids waiting to enter an sag, this is a good little side game you can play while they wait. As a coach, make them use their backhand or their feet and receive tough passes.
Really liked this warmup from @transformbball Passing tennis provided some tough challenges, especially on the backhand. Good way to use deceptive passes as well. Only rule was it had to be a reasonable pass, not a shot obviously. Fun and competitive as well.

What’s the skill? Wall pickup or… Scan, pickup, identify pressure, deceive defender, get pass on tape=scoring chance Simplify the training but keep the context. Problem solving, not drill repetition

One of the key skills in practice design is being able to take a complex game and create a simpler version without losing what makes it the game. Think about it as taking a slice of the game Here are 5 steps I use when designing these activities 👇

Great chat with @MatiszJohn 👊
Nikita Kucherov said last week that he believes the NHL today is faster, but dumb and “low IQ.” @MatiszJohn asked some coaches and players to see if there is any merit to Kucherov's assessment. sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/kuc…

Your stick and your eyes tell a story…..make sure it’s a lie. Also a great look at scanning for info. Not just scanning to scan but making the right play at the right time. see-perceive-decide-act
You’ve seen a no look pass How about a no look goal?

There is the “perception” of what learning looks like. Then there is what it actually looks like… And those 2 things are often wildly different.
Watching my daughter’s training and I think I would rather stick hot pokers in my eyes so as to not have to suffer. Seriously. Just dropping a ball and letting them play would be exponemtially better than this “training.” 😳 #TOVO

3v2 quick shooter This is a good one to add a 2-3 sec limit with the puck. Great for kids who dangle too much -back door, one T, catch an shoot -pull D away -can make shooter change -sliding in and out of open space -deceptive passes/shots -let the puck do the work

If they lack movement skills off the ice, we aren’t going to improve movement on the ice. You can hide it for a while with size or experience but it’s a struggle when those advantages disappear.

This is a small group obviously but I’ve been experimenting with a few ways to encourage quick shooting with these guys. The second one they are trying to get the shot off before their partner.

Deception is the act of causing a person(or 6 people) to believe untrue information. 👇 Can’t deceive a cone or blinking light.
Some of the sickest behind the net work I've ever seen.

We talk about ‘developing players’, as if coaches, clubs or federations produce development. We can’t. Players develop themselves by perceiving, acting, adapting & learning through experience. Our job isn’t to manufacture talent, but create environments where development emerges.

Teaching what to do usually isn’t enough. The freedom to play, make mistakes and learn inside game situations in practice is the difference between a good decision and a bad one.
