In the 1974 text, Carrie isn’t "Hollywood awkward" waiting for a prom night makeover. She is explicitly written as an overweight, bovine pariah with bad posture, chronic boils, pimples on her back, and greasy, unwashed hair. She was physically repulsive to a superficial high school ecosystem. When adaptations cast gorgeous actresses with flawless skin and tailored waists, the bullying stops making sense. It transforms an ugly, systemic purge of an actual social untouchable into petty, jealous teen melodrama. In the book, Carrie's prom dress wasn't an ugly duckling turning into a swan, it was a heartbreakingly homemade, modest garment that simply revealed she had a human waistline. Hollywood keeps sanitizing her body because they are terrified of showing a female lead the audience might genuinely find difficult to look at.
