Of nerdy urbanist interest: Next week the D.C. Council will cast a first vote on @BrianneKNadeau's bill to allow for new D.C. buildings up to six stories tall to have only a single stairwell in them, instead of the current two. Proponents say it creates more residential space.

President Trump thinks he is above the law. He steals from taxpayers. He thumbs his nose at the law. And now, he is starting an illegal war with Venezuela that Americans didn’t ask for and has nothing to do with our security. How does going to war in South America help regular Americans who are struggling? How does this do anything about drugs entering the U.S. when Venezuela produces no fentanyl? What is the actual security threat to the United States? And what happens next in Venezuela? He cannot answer these questions - and that’s why there was no briefing to Congress to explain this action, and no briefing scheduled. And Maduro’s illegitimate election does not give the president the power to invade without congressional approval, nor does it create a national security justification. That contention is laughable. This is about satisfying Trump’s vanity, making good on the long standing neocon grudge against Maduro, enriching Trump’s oil industry backers, and distracting voters from Epstein and rising costs.

Same great hoagies from @BubandPops new location (100 Florida Ave NE) with tons of indoor & outdoor seating. Also, you can now customize your sandwich. Tried a couple less ordered options - eggplant parm and fried fish. Both excellent. They've locked in the homemade sesame bread.

Let us be clear: armed soldiers should not be policing American citizens on American soil. Instead of making DC more secure, it undermines public safety and endangers our democracy. It’s DC today, but the same dangerous strategy can be deployed to occupy any American community.

This is truly the missing link for American cities - commercial spaces where the overhead is small enough that a business can be run by one person or a couple. You won't ever get rich, but you can have a middle-class life, close for a couple of weeks for vacation, etc.
The *scale problem* explains so much about American commerce/land use/transportation:/housing. We are missing something like the bottom half of the "scale ladder" for almost everything - streets, vehicles, homes, commercial spaces. thedeletedscenes.substack.co…

The outcome of today’s hearing is a win for Home Rule and upholds the District’s right to operate its own local police force. The Court recognized that it was clearly unlawful for the Administration to try to seize control of the Metropolitan Police Department. Chief Smith and @MayorBowser rightfully remain in command of MPD. There is still a long road ahead, but together, we will keep fighting to defend the District’s self-governance and protect the rights and safety of DC residents.

Did you know that Constitution Avenue was once a canal? Part of the original plans for the city, the Washington Canal ran from the Potomac River past the White House before cutting across the National Mall closer to the Capitol. Learn more: nps.gov/articles/history-arc… #WashingtonDC

All the parents who want to raise kids in amenity-rich, walkable cities are nodding heads in agreement
I'm an "urbanist" ad people tend to presume I prefer the picture on the right. But while I think that skylines are cool and towers make sense with insane property prices, Copenhagen style development is better. Most of the compact density, less emissions, much more livability.

Understanding the impact historic district designation has on demographics, affluence and segregation is important for DC to know. But outsourcing the task to stakeholders with clear interests in the outcome is the wrong way to do it. Do better @OPinDC ggwash.org/view/100166/op-pr…

Independence Day is a reminder that America is not the project of any one person. The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word ‘We.’ ‘We The People.’ ‘We Shall Overcome.’ ‘Yes We Can.’ America is owned by no one. It belongs to all citizens. And at this moment in history—when core democratic principles seem to be continuously under attack, when too many people around the world have become cynical and disengaged—now is precisely the time to ask ourselves tough questions about how we can build our democracies and make them work in meaningful and practical ways for ordinary people.
