The Internet was largely unencrypted until the mid-2010s in response to the Snowden leaks. Gmail introduced optional encryption only in 2008 (mandatory from 2010). Most services were later than that.
That's to all of you thinking that the web will stop working if cryptography breaks. It will be different, sure, but it'll still work.
The crypto industry really is uniquely exposed because cryptography is load-bearing as the only form of identification.
Hi. If elliptic curves are broken so that any exposed public key leads to compromise, and it's not by white hat hackers who save everyone's assets first, your coins are going to zero. Having them in bunker mode is not going to help you. They are still worth zero.
Today I call upon the blockchain industry to calmly begin planning for "bunker mode". My personal recommendation is to set in motion a controlled mass migration of assets to fresh addresses, i.e. addresses whose pubkeys remain hidden behind a hash.
Holders, starting with large and sophisticated ones, should consider moving the bulk of their funds to addresses that have never signed a transaction. And when they do sign one, they should also move remaining funds to a new address (possibly generated from the same seed phrase).
Don't rush. While I believe there is cause for action a rushed migration would do more harm than good. Don't panic either. Moving assets to protected addresses is a simple, preventative step which does not require new cryptography or new wallets.
IMO it is now reasonable to brace for the possibility that ECDSA breaks before qday, in the worst case in months not years. By "break" I mean fast private key recovery (e.g. in one week) on available hardware (e.g. a large GPU cluster).
Recent days have been humbling for human mathematical intuition. Long-held, unquestioned hypotheses have fallen. This includes the n log(n) bound for integer multiplication and the 3SUM conjecture. In hindsight, May's unexpected disproof of the Erdős unit distance conjecture was our warning shot.
Yesterday's OpenAI drop made it clear that mathematical superintelligence is upon us. They say there are weeks where decades happen. We are about to live through weeks where centuries of mathematical progress happen. Could our magic 64-byte ECDSA signatures be too good to be true? Was it just security through obscurity all this time?
Elliptic curves feel especially vulnerable to superintelligence. Curves carry rich structure, with room for fancy tricks like Schoof, Frobenius, pairings. (By contrast, hashes are designed to minimise algebraic structure.)
Separately, as Ewin Tang can attest, an efficient quantum algorithm sometimes foreshadows an efficient classical one. We should be open to the possibility of a classical counterpart to Shor that breaks elliptic curves and RSA at once.
Also noteworthy is the striking under-representation of cryptographic breakthroughs among the 722 mathematical results OpenAI published. I've witnessed first-hand the US government censoring academic quantum cryptanalysis results. Backroom interventionism is my base case.
I urge large, sophisticated actors to lead by example. Project11's "risq list" (bitcoin-risq-list.projecteleven[.]com) is a great tracker of exposed BTC pubkeys. Binance, Bitbank, Robinhood, Bitfinex, and Tether have an opportunity to harden their cold storage. Next month I'll address institutions in London in a live Q&A (forum.ethereuminstitutional[.]org/london-2026).
Again, please do not rush. Wallets holding under 50 BTC enjoy partial cover from "Satoshi's shield", i.e. his 20K exposed addresses that hold 50 BTC each. Load-bearing signers like oracles and L2 security councils should consider rotating ECDSA pubkeys with every signed message and/or multi-signing with a hash-based schemes like SPHINCS.
Exiting bunker mode safely will require post-AI cryptography. My inclination is to go all-in on hash-based cryptography and avoid structured mathematical assumptions entirely, whether from curves, lattices, or isogenies. A single battle-tested hash (e.g. from the SHA or BLAKE families) yields plausible post-AI security.
The Ethereum roadmap on strawmap[.]org fully embraces hash-based cryptography with end-to-end formal verification as a response to the quantum threat. Those timelines must now be revisited and accelerated in light of mathematical superintelligence. I'll be pushing for maximum defensive acceleration.
People are surprised that AI is finding weird unelegant maths results like this. I think there is a plausible explanation.
Maths (and adjacent disciplines like physics and comp sci) had elegant results so far because humans are biased towards elegant solutions. I think this bias is due to how human minds work. We have a pretty small context window, and we are only able to find solutions that are relatively elegant.
This gave us the impression that maths and the universe are elegant. Maybe they are not, and we are now finding out because we have intelligences that can work with much more complex solutions.
Ethereum is getting left behind because nobody is doing BD for Ethereum.
Surprised this hasn’t gotten more attention: Ethereum L1 is barely showing up in the tokenized equities boom.
Tokenized equities already account for 12% of spot DEX vol on-chain, yet Ethereum L1 has close to 0 market share.
Robinhood, Arbitrum and Base are doing the gruntwork obviously. But where does that leave the L1?
Tokenization is going to reshape the onchain economy, and tokenized equities are going to be the fastest-growing segment over the next 2 years.
Ethereum needs a clear vision for what belongs on L1, what moves to L2s, and how the two fit together, from security and governance to liquidity and value accrual.
More on this in my article next week.

Update your iPhones today!
@Apple Finally put passkeys into the secure enclave ONLY! They should not be decrypted outside the enclave. They can, and will, be stolen...
Zero-day remote code execution vulnerability in iPhone Safari. Click a link, and your crypto, passwords and everything else on your iPhone are gone.
Exploited in the wild by "DarkSword" malware.
"The DarkSword attack program has leaked, with its core capability being: extracting forensic-level data from iOS devices via HTTP interfaces. In actual attacks, attackers can combine social engineering or watering hole attacks to lure users into falling victim, thereby stealing data from iPhone / iPad devices and uploading it to servers controlled by the attackers."
Update iPhones immediately. Apple originally patched this, but rumours suggest even the latest versions are vulnerable, “pending confirmation,” across a wider range than the original 18.4–18.7 window.

Most people who claim that models aren't dangerous, or that the only way forward is max acceleration without brakes, probably believe this because they are even more scared of the alternative: If we admit that AI is dangerous then it needs to be regulated/controlled, and that means some insiders will have more powerful models (even more than is the case now) than everyone else.
This dilemma isn't really new: Regulation almost always benefits the incumbents, which is bad for everyone else to some extent, but we do it because the alternative of regular food poisoning and planes crashing out of the sky is worse.
Yudkowskyanism is clearly bullshit and based on black-and-white binary thinking: AI is like god, goes foom, wants to kill all humans
It is also morally repulsive: doesn't matter if billions of people die because extinction risk is the only thing that actually matters, pivotal acts
BUT
I still think the dangers from AI are massive and to be taken extremely seriously. Even if AI doesn't have any intent to kill humans, it can put us all out of jobs, marginalize us and take our resources away (maybe that wheat field is better for solar cells) and lead to our eventual demise. Or it can be used by malicious humans to inflict misery on many.
I do think that there is a real process to get to a good outcome as long as many of the people creating and training it have good intentions. But the chance of it going wrong is quite significant, 10% seems at least a reasonable estimate.

A few thoughts on ZCash (disclosure: Paradigm is an investor in ZEC and ZODL):
- All blockchain ecosystems struggle with long-term funding, especially of public goods, and an inflation-funded developer fund is an elegant mechanism to do so. How this fund is allocated is a fair debate, and we should strive to improve it. But, we believe the dev fund is important, particularly in this age of AI cyber capabilities, rate of quantum progress, etc.
- As ZCash grows in acceptance and adoption as a private complement to Bitcoin, we think pure coinvoting governance introduces unpredictability that could limit long-term trust as a monetary asset, and it is better for the project to combine coinvoting with other forms of governance.

Hiring for product engineers to work on the front lines with us @tempo and our customers
- build protocols (EVM for payments)
- vertically integrated tech stack
- real world products with 100M+ users
- serious customers (fintechs, banks)
- unlimited AI budget to move fast
Why the ends don't justify the means 101
remember, if you believe that only you can save humanity from extinction, and you are a consequentialist, you are morally willing to commit unspeakable evil in support of that goal.
if your p_doom is 10% in a decade that means your current expected value of the status quo is negative 800 million lives.
so it's completely rational – if you really believe this – to sacrifice single or double digit millions in pursuit of that goal.
this means: if you think the frontier is insufficiently focused on safety, that it's acceptable to release a false flag bioweapon, agent swarm on grid infrastructure, etc. what are a couple million lives in exchange for billions?
this is why EAs and hardcore consequentialists that are "safety pilled" are extremely dangerous.
If we prove P=NP, it's most likely that it will have zero implications for cryptography and instead mean that our mathematical axioms are bad.
Similar thing to Banach-Tarski. Very interesting to the mathematician, but zero implications in the real world. What it really shows us is that nonconstructive mathematics doesn't provide the best models for the physical world.
Great. Now we should declare distillation fair use.
