Movement captured in stillness. Feather by feather, the peacock takes shape against Japanese gold leaf, where intricate realism meets the beauty of natural movement. Visible Air. ropp.jp #FineArt #VisibleAir

Before I learned to capture movement on canvas, I learned to understand it in the air. Aviation shaped how I see the world, and continues to influence how I paint the forces we cannot see. Visible Air. ropp.jp #DanRoppArt #VisibleAir

Traditional Japanese gold leaf. Western realism. Two artistic traditions, brought together through light, observation, and craftsmanship. #DanRopp #VisibleAir

A painting begins long before the first brushstroke. It begins with observation, memory, and the experiences that shape how we see the world. For me, aviation and art have never been separate disciplines. Both demand an understanding of light, movement, and the space between.

One of my favorite parts of painting is backing away from it. Up close: marks. Across the room: movement.

Test flying and painting seem like completely different worlds. Both taught me to look closely, question what I see, and pay attention to very small changes.

I’m less interested in painting a bird as a static object than in painting what happens when it moves through air. That idea became Visible Air.

Before I painted flight, I spent a career inside it. I don't paint airplanes much anymore, but aviation fundamentally changed the way I see movement. #Aviation

There's always a point where I have to stop painting what the reference photograph says and start listening to what the painting says. That's usually when things get interesting.

One reason I love working with gold: it never really stays the same. Walk past the painting and the surface changes with you. Light becomes part of the composition. #GoldLeaf

I was fascinated by flight long before I understood aerodynamics, became a pilot, or seriously considered becoming an artist. Funny how certain subjects keep following us through life. #Aviation

I spent much of my life studying flight from inside a cockpit. Now I’m exploring it from inside a studio. Visible Air is a new series about birds in flight, and an attempt to make the invisible movement of the air around them visible. This is the story behind it. #VisibleAir

The cockpit once framed my view.
かつてはコックピットが世界を切り取っていた。 Now the canvas does.
